My Naked engine bay...

Post by SchumieFan »

Well, for those of you who are aware... a few weeks ago i blew my head gasket,

Today! i finally got the heads off! WHAT A f**king MISSION! im down to the block now and ive just scraped all the gaskets off and im ready to put the new 1's on, i got a full gasket set from Repco for $392, which includes all the oil seals, inlet gasket, cam cover/rocker cover gasket, EVERYTHING.

Because its a bloody MIVEC the adjustable tappets are my main concern, as you will see in the pics i intend to post, my rear bank has been opened atleast once and the little knobby bits that sit between the tappets and the ballbearing (those of you who have opened 1 will know what i mean(again ill take pictures) is damaged and 3 of the plastic covers holding them on are gone, so its going to be delecate putting it back on.

ALSO.... WIRING! HOLY f**k! i really hope i remember to put all the damn wires back on, im following the repair guide so i should have no problems.

5 minute job turning into a 2 hour job? yep, that would be trying to get the crank pully nut off... several swear words, a phone call to Mitsubishi to make sure it was a right hand thread and 2 hours of pulling eventually pulled the bloody nut off....

im almost at the point i wished id just gone to town and traded it on that GPvR... oh well.... the things we do for love eh?

What is that little plastic thing around the tappet for, because when I done my tappets I noticed that one of them were broken on mine, so it just sits there loose around the tappet.
I thought it might be for holding oil around the tappet or something.

It doesn't just sit there loose as such, it actualy holds the "floating" end piece of the tappet in place.

So, basically you will have a bit of plastic and the metal end piece sitting in the bottom of the sump.

That one little plasit thing is still siting on the tappet but only loose, what happens when it does come off, does it do any damage...I think I might need to buy one, you wouldn't happen to know how to replace it.

What do you mean the tappet adjusters only come as part of the screw, does it have that little plastic bit that goes around the tappet, is it hard to fit.

Nope - they come as a complete piece. The plastic cap which houses the "floating" tappet if you like is sealed on there firmly.

It's not something that is replacable or just clips on easily.

$35 - is that each?? I got mine from Nihon in QLD - $15 each.

I think you should call Nihon (aka Joe & Riks) - still have the receipt on my desk.

    4 x Valve Adjuster - Mitsubishi FTO MIVEC - $60 (plus GST & postage).

Nah, ive already bought them now, and im not particully bothered by the price (id set $1300 aside for a new engine) so ive spent $192 on a new cambelt, $392 on a new gasket set and $105 on new adjusters.... so ive still got a bit left over.... just gotta get all the wiring on properly.... thats what im scared of! but so long as i stick to the workshop manual ill be sweet as bro 8)

i cant get a day off to bloody put the thing back together! thats my biggest prob at the mo
