Spluttering at 7.5k RPM

Post by frozenwaffles »

Hi Guys, i have noticed that even when warm, if i take the engine up to around 7500 RPM, it seems to splutter a little bit...does anyone know what i am talking about? have you heard of it before?

Yep that sputtering can still happen even when the temp gauge shows warm if it's still too near the time it has reached standard operating temperature. From cold start I would give it at least 10 mins just to be safe before I play in the MIVEC region.

What sort of fuel do you use?

Could be pinging before the knock sensor kicks in?

Cheers

do you have a GR, and does the car jerk back and forth a lot on the spluttering or is it more like a rev limitter feel?

its a GPvR, so its a mivec. it does feel almost like a rev limiter. if the car is cold, then it makes the same spluttering noise at around 5 or 6 thousand RPM. it doesnt really jurk much, but it does shudder a little.

i was thinking it could be spark plugs.... because my old magna used to do the same from time to time, but that was cruising at ~100ks normally and/or under load where there would be a build up of whatever clogs spark plugs up. wasnt consistant though, although it was best described as a 'shudder' aswell

Yep that's exactly what I get when the car has only been running under 10 mins from a cold start. Either way when you hear it it's not really a good sound so it can't be good for your engine so try and avoid it.

I would have to go with SG, the spark plugs probably have aged abit and can't supply a good spark at that RPM, the engine under a fair bit of load that it basially blows out the spark, also it could be the coil and leads, not providing enough energy at the RPM to make a good spark.

Thats a good point... could be a coil pack failing....

That can be checked by seeing the error codes on the ECU
