stalling...

Post by MIVEC_GPX »

hey guys,

i have a 96 GPX manual

over the last week or so ive been noticing this problem with my car. after accelerating up to say 60km/h sometimes i put my car into neutral and let it roll (say im going down a hill or something). this last week or so, when i put it into neutral the revs will drop very low almost to the point of stalling ( all the dash lights will come on, then it finds idle again) or even stalling sometimes. the same thing happens if im moving slowly in traffic and i put the clutch in and come to a stop.......
i got no idea what it might be and its slowly starting to happen more often
any help will be much appreciated!

cheers

Can I ask a silly question - why do you put it in neutral when going down hill? :?

Putting it in Neutral removes a lot of your control over your car :?

Stepper Motor

Post by dstocks »

Not that im an expert, but after reading one of the posts from earlier in the week, Id say it was your stepper motor. Symptoms sound similar.

    Ho there - I had the same problem with mine last week. Would put the clutch down when coming to an intersection or roundabout, and she'd stall on me. And yes she'd start straight away afterwards.

    Changed out the stepper motor (about NZ$200) from Kempys in NZ and she's back to her old self. Very easy to do - lift up the pipe from the airbox to the engine, unplug the stepper motor, 2 bolts and it's out.

    Or you can try cleaning it first... I tried this, and it lasted 2days before the problem came back :).

    If its not the stepper then its more than likey the TPS / IPS module.
    TPS = Throttle Position Sensor
    IPS = Idle Position Switch

    Image

    The IPS/TPS are both housed in the black circular thing attached to the front of the throttlebody

    chances are its covered in black carbon (its from the crankcase breather)

    pull it off (8mm socket from memory could be 10mm)...
    lots of wd40 and a screwdriver.

    be VERY VERY careful you don't loose any of the little bits in side and clean it all gently

    put it back together and on the car

    some people say to reset the ecu i've never bothered with this myself as the car adjusts pretty quickly to a working stepper motor...

    oh just a word of warning if your mech (or yourself) has adjusted the idle throttle chances are now it'll rev to 1500 ... you need a flat blade screwdriver and someone to tell you the idle off the instrument cluster set it to around 750 in neutral and all should be good.

    have fun it only takes about 30minutes to clean
