Digging A Hole

Post by Nacho »

Not sure what section this is meant to be in but has anyone here ever dug themselves a pit? I think khunjeng may have but I'm not sure.

Do you need a permit for this sort of thing? Do you just pour concrete into the hole?

hey Joel

I am very lucky and I have 1 garage and 1 carport (4 spaces in total) Cos I live in my Dads old house..when buliding the garage he wanted a pit - not for cars, for our yacht...it was actually designed especially so we could get the 1 tonne keel out on a hoist - which a few years ago I did it and it was perfect...

Obviously I don't need that often...but its i nice size for getting under the car for work - oil especially...

Not sure about permits...fuk it I wouldn't bother with that but make sure you think about a drain...my has flooded a few times in very heavy rain and it takes ages to get the water out..but not impossible...

Mine is concrete ...if you are serious I would have this and some kind of hoist system above it (i.e. put it under a I beam or something..depending on your garage deisgn i guess

Cos I've only recently got into cars and stuff after buying my FTO I havnt' fully used it yet...but its def. getting used more...like for example I was looking at the pulleys last night and its so easy to get under with light and check stuff out.

Before you go digging you should call your utilities company and check to make sure there aren't and cables/pipelines running underneath that area.

You'll also most likely need building plan clearances to build the garage, I know you do in the ACT.

I have done the owner builder thing a few times now and I have to say that apart from finding out about storm water pipes, gas pipes etc (which you should be able to obtain from your local council for about $30), there is nothing stopping you. The drain is a good idea and there is only an issue of approval if you sell without it having been approved. In this scenario, simply fill it back in before selling and noone is the wiser! :D

Looks fairly straight forward then. I'm currently building on an empty block of land and I'm only building a 2 car garage and because there's nothing there in the way of concrete etc. it would be easier to dig a pit there. Better ask my council I suppose.

And yes it would make a good grave too if I ever feel the impulse to be extra naughty!
