suspension/spring incompatibility

Post by testlabmonkey »

Ok please ignore anything i get wrong here as i am trying to explain something im not technically gifted at :).

Took my car to pedders yesterday and they told me that my rear struts (or shocks i forget) are from a lancer or mirage and that the fto springs do not sit correctly where they should be.... the spring is a much smaller coil and sits inside the correct seating. this may be the source of some suspension noises i have from the back... has anyone else had this issue???

any suggestions??? anyone gotten proper fto rear struts installed recently?

pedders didnt seem overly concerned about it but they said that it wasnt the best idea which i would agree.

That wouldn't surprise me. There is a lot of misconceptions as to what Lancer / Mirage / FTO bit are inter-compatible. Some bit are - some aren't. I'd just go get a pair or rear struts from a wrecker. They 'aint hard to get out either, 3 bolts & a spring compressor reqd...

A friend of mine with an FTO is having a similar problem.

His stock shocks are gone, and after going to a suspension place they told him they can't get a hold of aftermarket FTO struts, but that lancer/mirage ones fit.
Now the only problem here is as you say the spring doesn't sit right, but otherwise if you had some externally adjustable ones it wouldn't be a problem.

What I would do, is try to find FTO aftermarket items (call Koni, KYB etc) and if in fact you can't find any and this is really a concern to you, get some custom springs made to suit a mirage/lancer but have the height and spring rate of the original springs in there. K-Mac do this I believe.
