Engine / Transmission Removal

Hey everyone,

I need help from anyone who has ever removed the engine and transmission before.

I'm going off the FTO workshop manual and apparently the transmission needs to come off before the engine does.

My main question is that wether you can keep the wheels attached to the car even when the transmission has been removed?

The car needs to be towed to the workshop to start on the chassis modifications.

Any advice in engine / transmission removal would also be greatly appreciated.

Yes, tranny does have to come off, yes wheels have to come off the hubs to pop the drive shafts out. Then its a matter of getting the tranny out around the cross member. Much swearing, much barked knuckles

One its out you can put the hubs & wheels back on pretty easy.

Yes sounds like a big job but I'm not in any hurry. I don't know how I'm gonna do it without using a hoist. You think I would have enough clearance off the ground to remove the tranny using only car ramps?

Nacho, i think u should ring Lee before you going to do anything, or better still, just pay him a visit with loads of food & beer hahahahaa

I spoke to him and he's charging $300 to remove the engine which is reasonable.....i think? I honestly don't know what to ask him because I want to LEARN how to remove the engine on my own and also put it back in on my own. Do you think he would teach me? You know him better than I do.

Well your situation is a bit complicated now mate, because you already ask him how much it cost for him to remove it for you, so i guess is only fair to say he won't tell u now. After all he is running a business.

If i can find some spare time this Sat, i have a chat to him & see if i can organize something for you, but no promise bro.

It's alright Kev he probably won't remember who I am coz we only spoke briefly over the phone a while ago. $300 is a bargain price for an engine removal I know but my goal is to not just get it out but learn how to do it properly.

Seriously though I'm in no rush to do it over the next few weeks being Christmas and all. I will just strip the interior (carpets, seats etc) in the meantime. Maybe I can come across a few DIY's to put up on this forum.

Kev maybe you can hook us up with Lee and get a whole group of us (anyone interested) to watch how its done. (Sounds like something out of a dirty movie......hahahahah

id love too... but cant see it being possible from a time perspective (for me or lee)....

I am going to drop my car off at lees in the new year to get the engine out as well though and taken apart

Well time is always the hard factor. You can't please everyone. Worse comes to worse I will figure out how to do it myself and maybe do some kinda DIY guide.

Well I just got the council permit approved for my dance studio so I won't need to give you a DIY in about a years time. Maybe I can give freebie lesson in exchange for some mechanical labour for anyone interested.......hehehe

Why you talking about picking up chicks for anyway? Aren't you married?

I just gotta figure out how to do it first. But yeah I love to teach so maybe one day I can hook anyone up with a few dance lessons once I find a bit more time to myself.
