sunroof or no sunroof? installation possible?

Post by fto_bro85 »

hi all!

just joined this site, although I dont have my FTO yet...I'm looking around at different options and well, I really wanted a GPX with a sunroof in a manual trans...a bit hard to find though. I have only located 1 in Vic under $15,000 so far, but the interior is not in as good condition as i would have liked...cracked dash panels and whatnot. so...firstly are FTO parts like dasah panels hard to come by, im guessin you wont have much luck at a wreckers...more likely from Mitsubishi rite?
secondly, if i was to get an FTO without a sunroof, whats the complications or likelyhood of getting one installed later by Mitsubishi when i have the time and money?

thanks all!

Hope you find a FTO soon, I got one importing right now, it get in the country on the 22nd of this month, its a Black manual GPX, I can't wait to get it.
getting parts like the dash panels I'm not sure where to get them I guess from some companies like www.japperformance.com, and with the sunroof I have found that a panel beater where I live fits after market sunrooves, I seen them on a couple of Holden Utes that are running around, I'm not sure how much they cost but they look very good like if it was stock.

The problem with non-sunroof FTOs is that they have a groove running down the middle of the roof. This makes it hard to install after market ones without it looking after market

i know of one and its pretty cheap too, but i dont have the $$ yet...grr again...lol. i have a 96 magna, selling it to get an FTO...need to sell it first to have enough. just hoping the FTO doesn't get sold before my magna does. my magna's pretty tricked out...custom interior respray, door trims, 17" rims, exhaust, etc...all the other nick nacks.
only prob with this FTO is some interior panels are cracked, if i can find a place to get replacement parts...ill get this one...otherwise ill be looking for a while i guess...judging by your trouble finding one with a sunroof....

any suggestions...spare parts for FTO's?

Just import an FTO, I went with Special Vehicle Imports www.svi.com.au, they found the FTO I want in less than 2 weeks, most of the time is just waiting for it to get here, just give them info on what you are looking for and your price range.

Exactly which dash panel is cracked??

If it's the bit around the stereo, buy the car anyway as a lot of FTO's have that panel cracked.

Yep, If you want a factory sunroof, buy one with it in. Would cost a fortune to buy the bits apart from the fact that the roof is different (So is th lining. Make sure when you are looking that there arent rust bubbles in the roof. Mine has those. Have a look at the thread called 'Rust...' in FOT Help for more info

Good Luck

Don't expect to find an exceptional FTO for less than 15k.

Owners of those cars know their value.

how long did it take to actually import the car?

im tossing up wether to import one and wait up to 12 weeks (so ive been told) or buy one here - a more expensive option, but quicker...

I'm sorta still waiting for it, is arives in brisbane on the 22nd of this month, but it was like 2 weeks for them to find me the car that I wanted, they E-mailed me the FTO's they have found and you choose which one you want.
Shipping it here takes about 3-4 weeks, mine took about 3 weeks, then it is only a couple of days for it to get complied then about 10days for the transport department to make a complience plate, then it is ready to be regestered and driven away.
When you choose the FTO you want they send you a lot of photos of the car and the auction sheet aswell.

I've been told by an importer that it's common practice to replace the instrument cluster with low KM ones when putting them on auction in Japan. You might not be getting a 51k km car :(

Yeah I am aware of that, the import company told me about that aswell, they say it is the genuin Km's, so all I can say is I hope he is telling the truth.
