have i been booked???

Was driving home yesterday and i was pretty late, didnt go too fast, just 70km/hr busy overtaking the car infront of me to notice that as soon as i did,i reached the hill top and saw that i was about 30m from to cops standing on the other side of the road with a hand-held radar fing........

DANG

tried to brake to sixty, then saw the sign across the street from them saying 50, so i gave up, thinking that if they saw me, they saw me already,

but the thing is, it was twilight and tehy just looked at me but didnt stop me.

so the question i have is: HAVE I BEEN BOOKED?

do those handheld radars come with a camera function that can record your number plate down? ahhhh bugger..

i guess its a good thing that i just got off my P's so i wont lose my licence

but i would of thought if they used a radar gun, they'll come chasing after ya once they spotted u - those guns have a pretty long range...

i thought they'd flag me down like they normally do to ppl on the freeways,
but yeah i guess no flashing lights in the rear-view mirror is a great start.

oh, and the long range wouldnt do much, because i didnt really spot them til i was ova the hill. by which point i was actually pretty close to them already.

First of all "radars" are long gone...lasers are now being used with a range of much more than 500m, but thats just a mere technicality. In short, NO, you definitely have NOT been booked, lasers do not have any camera on them, they just record speed. So if you were to be booked they would have flagged you down in front of you, unless you were too close in which case the other copper would have jumped in the car and flashed you over. Sounds like you were lucky

In Australia they don't user lasers with camera setups...having worked and designed a number of speed camera systems used within Aust and the US (including tolling camera systems) I sold heaps of these laser/camera setups to HK...they loved them...dunno why we never got them.

Anyway if they didn't stop u then u r ok...

Another thing to note...Fixed speed cameras uses sensors in the road (99% of the time) they only work ont he side of the road they are mounted so simply slow down then speed up again...they are usually set to a 10%+ tolerence other wise they would book 25,000 cars per day...and I have tested this and my pcs kept falling over..that other thing on a pole is the flash (not a radar) you would not belive how many ppl have asked me this...therefore at night if you did not see a bright flash...u didn't get booked (although this is not 100% true depending on the brand) i.e. the CitiLink tunnels don't use a flash cos of the constant lighting its easy to set these up without...

Anyway felt like typeing this...

Wait, are you saying that fixed speed camera's detect speed through sensors in/on the road itself? There's no actual radar/laser involved?

yep. look for the 2 black sensor lines on the road next time. hence if you slow down before the sensor and then speed up straight after there's no chance in hell of detecting your speed.

however.......... i've heard that they are going to trial a system where it calculates your average speed over a greater distance, eg. 1km. Obviously this is on a stretch of road with the same speed limit. If you get from point a to point b faster than the average time for that stretch then you'll get a fine. kinda hard to imagine how they would get this to work as people could speed like nuts for the first 100m then go really really slow over the rest of that stretch... but hey this is just a rumour anyway.

speed camera only works when your driving away from it aswell... not towards it...

Sorry Jonowong, a lot of speed cameras are now bi-directional, so they will get you both sides of the road. When you are approaching a camera that is on the other side of the road check for sensor pads on your side. If you see them, its a bi-directional camera and you will get pinged.

what exactly do these sensor pads look like?

because i've been drivinig at full speed when i'm on the other side of the road to a speed camera.

they loook like 3 lines cut into the road and then something put there and then covered again lol they are deep... n u can feel the bumps when u drive over them

As jonowong said wild_flower, look for the three lines in the road just as you get to the camera, they are pretty close to it.
