Brake Balance

Post by CraigNZ »

Failed WOF ….. When breaking hard on the road the left front locks and it feels like the back is trying to swing round to the right. The bottom slider pin on the front left was seized and the inside pad had worn the inside of the brake disc. I changed the disc and freed up the slider but it’s still no different.

Is there a balance valve that could be playing up or could this be a pad problem. Not been on a brake machine so I don't know what the readings
are.

Anyone know where I could get a break diagram

Thanks

There is only 1 valve in the front & it isnt even a real 'valve' as such - just a 2 way splitter. I've reconditioned my calipers before & chances are - if the slide pins have seized up, then one or more of the brake pistons will have seized or is about too. The main reason for pins seizing is due to a lot of heavy braking in the past. Heavy braking causes the brakes assembly to heat up. If they are heated to such a point regularly, the heat actually 'cooks' the grease lubrication on the slide pin & all but 'bakes' it solid. Hence why slide pins seize. Having said that - all the excess heat can also 'cook' the seals on the actual brake pistons. You can tell by pulling the calipers off, take the lid of the brake fluid master cylinder & try and push the pistons back into their sleeves. If one of them is much harder to push back, then bingo.... you'll need a set of multigrips to do it. I would pull the calipers off completely & re-co them. You also need to look out for rust on the pistons, rust can build up around the area of the piston that is exposed to the elements. Replace all the rubber components & I would buy new slide pins as well. Hope that helps

Thanks for the advice. The mechanic is convinced that there is a diagonal brake balance problem, and the rear right is not doing enough and the left front too much causing it to lock and feel like the back is coming round. The only thing I didn't do when I changed the disc is fit new pads. I'll do what you suggest although I did take the calipers off before and pushed back the pistons quite easily with hand pressure.

Have emailed

Thanks....
