Well the law in NSW is no more then 30% dark I think... I could be wrong, but that figure rings a bell.

i think 30% is right. my tint is very dark not sure what % cause it was on it when i bought the car. i know it is legal and it is almost impossible to see into the car during the day and almost impossible to see out at night time. its very good tint :)

In victoria is 30% darkness for the side windows, & you can have 20% darkness for the rear window if you have two side mirror (remember some old cars still only got one side mirror). But you must have a certificate to proof that is no darker then 20%.

The best thing to do is call up VicRoad. As the rules might have change

FTO388 is correct for Vic...I had my FTO done which included the removal of the old tint...they suggested I get 20% on the side but since it would void my insurance it wasn't worth the risk...however tint is the way to go for sure but make sure its done by a decent place...some1 recommended Premier Tint in Melb and I must say they did a fantasic job - no scratches, bubbles or anything...however tints take like 1 month to settle and the FTO has some mesh stuff on the upper part of the rear window which takes like 4 weeks to look nice..for $350 I got all the old tint removed and new tint on...not bad. For my GPX that included the rear window, side windows and the 2 small back windows..

Well I've got "darkest legal tint" (whatever that is) on the side windows and they put double thickness on the back window. Basically impossible to see in during the day, have a small amount of trouble seeing out the back at night.

Mine are black. Pain in the ass driving with the windows up at night. Even more of a pain reversing at night. Looks good though.

Jase - had the same problem as you with my previous car. the silvia was imported in australia with tints so dark you couldn't see the interior even in the day with sun shining through it. the windscreen was slightly tinted as well 8O

Most places will tint your windscreen for cash only payments.

Of course if you get busted and have to take it off, well that's part of the deal too.

yeah and just because your car already has the dark tinting on it doesnt make it legal. but definately go to a good company as there is a big difference between cheap tinting and top quality tinting. nothing worse than that bubbling, peeling, purple sh*t. haha.

It also comes down to what type of tint they use as well.

I have been doing a bit of research into this too.

NSW darkest legal 35% all round
VIC (as we already know) 20% on rear and 30% on sides

Tint Professor have their 'spring special' for $265 for a coupe
Tint-a-car and another company both quoted $300

Tint Professor also offers free pickup and delivery of your car and can give you a courtesy car while its being done, which if a big bonus for those of us that work regular hours.

However if your not in a rush to get it done, during winter tint professor has deals for the same thing for only $100 due to the lower demand.
