Why did you buy an FTO and where did you first see one?

Post by robsta »

Just curious as to how everyone came across FTOs and why they decided to buy one.

Myself, I first saw them on Grand Turismo back in the days when PS1 was still 'cool'. I was 12 at the time and been in love with them ever since. Now I'm 18 and I've finally got mine :)

I brought it for my GF, because at the time i thought it looks good, & since its a FWD, the chance she be in trouble would be way less then all my other cars at the time, which are all turbo RWD petrol drinkers.

Now i end up selling almost all my other cars & kept the FTO & just one more car. I might still keep it even after my new cars arrive. It just show how good the FTO is. :D

I was walking to the train station to go to school several years ago and one drove past and I was stunned by it's looks :D

It only took about 4 years to save up enough dough to get one :?

I already had the family car thing happening, and it seemed pointless to have 2 family cars - may as well have one to enjoy. Have always been partial to Mitsubishi's and an FTO came up at the right price and here I am.

Have done a lot of car swapping in the past and the previous cars either didnt look the part or didnt handle the way I wanted them to or didnt have quite enough go. The FTO has all of the above and more......

:D Saw the Jackie Chan movie "Thunderbolt" when I was 17... Fell in love with the FTO after seeing that flick... Saved my pennies for years & tried to find a nice example for sale... Luckily for me a good mate ended up having to sell his & so I bought it from him...

Love the cosmetics...Handling & she's got enough poke not to fall into the "all show & no go" category!

hmmm saw it in a car mag in 94, when they show off new cars from around the globe,
You know "here is a new one from mitsu, FTO, but dont get too excited folks, its not coming down south" type thing the wheels and motor do.

I was awestruck, a vey expensive looking car at reasonable price. i was in love, i drooled over the pics for some time until i saw another article about it winning the jap car of the year and thought BASTARDS! bring it HERE!, i didnt know jack about importing so i figured owning it was a pipe dream and that was that.

low and behold, when i was about 19-20 and driving my commonwhore i saw one drive past me. i almost sh*t my pants i tell ya. then i began looking them up. didnt have the chance to buy one until much later, but i got it now and am a very happy man indeed.

Saw one driving along one day in my late teens. Had to do some research to find out what it was at the time. Wanted one since that time, took me about 10 years to achieve my dream.

At least now, no one can accuse me of having a mid life crisis later cause I've already got the sports car :)

It was four year ago in Belconnen Canberra, nearly snapped my neck getting a second look....what was that!! "an FTO my wife says"( being japanese, she was familiar with them).
So when it came to getting a new car I researched them, and the rest is driving history.

Prior to spotting adriano's FTO on Carsales I don't think i'd ever seen one before (well, obviously I had, but never taken note) and after browsing around the forums i've been in love ever since. The only car i'm trading my FTO for is another FTO, or something rediculously expensive.

This man has his head screwed on right.

I had taken an R33 for a test drive and was contemplating buying it when my older brother told me about the FTO. He had looked at getting one before he bought his WRX.

So I did a little bit of homework and started looking for one, found this one and took it for a drive.

A couple of days later I had my FTO. :D

Well I saw my first FTO at a Sydney import dealer back in probably 1997 or thereabouts when they were $40K odd! Actually didn't like the styling at the time and never thought much more about them.

Had my old car written off and got a small payout which meant I just had to buy something half decent. So I looked around and found the FTO again but much cheaper. My two previous cars were slightly oddball and far from common which was a trend I wanted to continue so the FTO it was. I personally thought the shape looked better in 2001 when I got it than 1997 when I first saw it! I realised very quickly that there were very few FTOs done up much. So it was always going to have a decent AV stereo setup and lowered on big mags to stand out from the rest. What wasn't initially planned was the full on rebuild that eventually occured. Still was worth all the hassles in the end to have a rather unique car and it is still missed occassionally :(
