gearbox troubles

gearbox troubles
hey, this problem only just started over the weekend, i was driving my car ('96gpx) when i went to shift into second and it would not go in, so i drive around for a while missing second going into third, about 10mins later i try second and it goes in, although not as cleanly as it once did. now when ever i drive the car it either doesnt go into second or if it goes in its that notchy it isnt funny, would anyone have any idea what this problem is. thanks for your help. cheers

I must admit, the frequency of gearbox problems lately in the FTO Help section is really beginning to make me worried. Is this a coincidence or is there some truely scary pattern starting to emerge here??
Have a look at the posts over about the last 6 weeks. The problem you are having has been covered off a few times I think (as to a resolution ????)

Manual or Tip? Are you having trouble getting it into any other gear?
Could be a number of things if its manual....
Could be clutch related - the clutch is not releasing far enough to make a clean shift.
Could be gold old fashioned gearbox wear. Usually whe its hard to get into second, it means the syncro cones are shot. They are a brass gear with triangular shaped teeth that spins in line with each gear cog. Allows smooth changing into gears. If thats gone - its box out & rebuild.

If its a tip box, then it could also be anumber of other things.
The amount of tip boxes blowing up at the moment is stagering.
Could be torque converter, could be transmission headers...
I'd take it somewhere....

yeah its manual, i think the clutch is fine, i just recently got a new clutch, sometimes when i shift into third it crunches a little bit. so by the sounds of it, it sounds like its the synchros could be going or gone
if it is the gearbox would anyone know the cost involved in rebuilding one, cheers.

Oh, also, the fix might be as easy as just revmatiching when you change gears, this takes all the load off the synchro's.
When you upshift allow the revs to fall 500-1000rpm, when you downshift either heel two or just blip the accelerator up 500-1000rpm.

Reason I ask if there are problems getting into other gears tells me maybe clutch. Now if you've just had a new one fitted, you can find that the new clutch pressure plate puts extra stress on the clutch actuating mechanisms - like the clutch master & slave cylinders. If you need a full box rebuild, your probably looking a worst case scenario 2.5k. Thankfully a manual box is a manual box - no wizz bang electronics in there

Putting the good oils in - as the guys have suggested - does work wonders on the FTO, but it is a band-aid solution....
