I brought fair bit of stuff from eBay before, you just really have to see your luck, as a seller might have over hundreds of 100% positive feedback, but he or she can still pull a dodgy, as i've seen it happen before.
So i guess you just have to ask much questions as possible, & hopefully you can pick up any bad vibe if the guy is dodgy.

theres heaps of cheap head units overseas but you have to be extremely careful with people your dealing with. Theres a LOT of scammers out there and hackers. dont deal with ones who give out alternate email addresses for able to bid or other bogus reasons. look at their feedback, what other items theyre selling (captain obvious someone's a scammer is when they have multiple items on sale, all ending in a matter of min or at the same time).
ive bought a nice sony deck before, got it installed but the face wasnt coming down to put cds.... mailed it back to get it repaired or replaced, and all the sellers said they never got it back.... so be extremely careful!!

Postage
Watch the postage too, that can be a real trap. Some people lower their prices so that it looks like a real bargain and then hit you with a very inflated postage price. make sure you confirm postage cost before bidding.
I have bought a number of items for my FTO from the UK and had no trouble. Just be prepared to wait in some cases (and wait and wait and wait). Surface mail can take several months.
Oh, and to get the item cheaper, dont bother bidding until the very end. Bidding early only encourages other people to get into a bidding war with you. In the heat of the moment you can end up paying more than the items worth just to beat the other person. Much better to work out how much you are prepared to pay and with several minutes to go put in your bid.
