need help getting my fto registered please

Post by frenzal »

need help please.
I recently got a 95 tip fto gpx from VIC and have a receipt of purchase.
i didnt get a certificate of registration (it is still registered to march 06 in vic by the sticker on the windscreen) or RWC.

When i tell NSW RTA they give me VIC roads number, and vica versa.

i have made so many calls to RTA's and recieved so many different answers i am just confused now.

Both rta's will not give me the registration certificate because i am not the sellerc. If i had that i would have no problem - the sticker attached to my car isnt enough.. or a receipt signed by the seller saying the veichle is completely mine.

Making things worse, the seller has decided to go on holidays or moved house and is completely uncontactable including the email address i have.

So any rta workers here lol ? Is any way to get the car registered in nsw without access to these documents?

By the way, its pretty stock apart from - Air filter - New exhaust (has been noise tested) - 17" oz rims

You could always rack up a couple of speeding fines.........

Would be one way to get the previous owner to contact you. :-)

Disclaimer: Not saying that I condone speeding on public roads.

I bought my FTO in VIC in March and I live in the ACT. I had something similar happen. I was told by VIC roads that the seller had to hand in the rego stuff BEFORE I took the car (this is supposedly to protect the seller from traffic infringements). At that point, the car is deregistered. You then need to get one of those temporary registrations to get it back to your place of residence (which is ridiculous). The problem with this is that ACT rego need the papers to prove ownership. What I did was to convince the seller to lend me the paperwork for a week with the promise that I would send it back in the mail when I had reached Canberra.

A Stat dec may also be worth a try.

Short answer - without proof of ownership (paperwork), you could be stuffed

This process is a mess. Ive been through it twice now and they dont make it easy

I bought my FTO from NSW (i live in Adelaide) basically when the car is sold the seller needs to fill in the back of the currect registration form.... The buyer fills in the new ownership details and both partys sign it....

You take this to your transport company and you need to re register it, if the car is registered for another 6 months in VIC its now worth nothing as your in another state and yeah u need to pay for a new registration and start form scratch, if the car doesnt have custom plates (and you have them signed into your name too) then u need buy new plates too ....

I got my car transported over and it wasnt registered when i got it so u need a 24 hour permit to take it down to your RTA for inspection for defects and then re register it .....

Hope this helps

Hmmmm did you do a check if this car is still under finance? Because this sounds suss to me. If you didn't get a transfer form from the seller, the car basically still belong to the "seller". Maybe you need to contact police to get this person new details.

BTW you should able to transfer your rego fee from state to state, i transfered my N.SW. rego fee to VIC, & the only thing i have to pay is the VIC plate.

Nup,

I got a similar thing from the person I bought my FTO from. Some dumb policy dreampt up by VIC rego. They have to hand in rego (effectively de-register car) before it can be sold.

In VIC,

you need to fill in the transfer form, or a contract of sale when you buy, sell a car.

If you sell a car without a RWC you need to hand in the plates as a seller and the new owner has 28 days to get a RWC and reclaim the plates from VicRoads (RTA) is not done the rego is cancelled.

If you did not get a contract of sale, then I would start to worry, as you do not own the car and you would have to go to court to prove that you purchased it. Please contact the seller and also get the VIN number checked if its stolen or any money is owing on it.
