I've just test driven an FTO that I'm interested in and I must say that it's a nice car to pedal around!
Anyway, this was the first FTO that I tested so I have to ask some questions as I haven't got anything else to compare against.
The car was an INVECS2 tiptronic GPX model but when I had it in 1st it wouldn't rev out. It got up to 6k and it sounded as if it was limited ie, just kept bouncing on 6k RPM and no higher. I couldn't get it to 6k in 2nd as I ran out of road (and was going a little over the limit too... ahem). So, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be limited to 6k in 1st and then revs out, or something weird like that.
What are your opinions? Has anybody had the same problem? Would it occur if there was an aftermarket ECU or anything?
ok, so if the car has been driven for over 10mins (at least) before I drove it and I took it for a 5min test drive, that should be warmed up substantially already then right? is there any kind of sensor that could be playing up?
There's always something that could be playing up....but I've never heard of this happening before.
It's generally a good idea to warm up idle for about 30 seconds then take it easy while driving for the next 5-10 minutes (or if you're a lucky bugger and have an oil temp gauge).
yeah i guess so. just wish there was some way i could make sure. what else do i have to look out for? is there anywhere in Sydney that specialises in FTO's that I can take it to give the car a quick once over?
was thinking that it could be a knock sensor issue as well after looking at a dyno graph from RichardH that shows the 6k limiter when the sensor is disconnected. I could hear the MIVEC kick in though.... between 5k-6k...
I have read of a number of people with this problem, if the car is well and truly warm then there is another issue. Mivec most likely not happening and revs limited to protect motor.

Yeah I had that problem in my old 96 GPX tiptronic. One day it just wouldn't hit mivec range. Even on kickdown it would bounce off the 5500/6000 range and not kickdown unless you pressed lightly enough so as not to cause a drop of too many gears (and then a consequent jump in revs).
It spent a couple of weeks off the road with the problem eventually being diagnosed as a faulty knock/detonation sensor. Only a cheap part but due to its position smack bang in the middle of the engine block - the labour cost was huge! From memory it cost approx $700...car was right as rain once it was fixed though.
yeh i always that problem in the morning to work, car not warm up especially mine is a manual, when i step too hard "to catch up with traffics" it fuel cuts off at 6K because engine is not warm up yet, it sounds like a BOV, which sounds pretty sweet
hey akuma3, i think this is a different problem to yours as the cold start limiter in the morning just cuts off fuel, where as this problem just limits the revs to around 6k rpm. in other words if i step on it in any gear and it reaches 6k rpm and I keep laying the foot flat on the accelerator it will just bounce at 6k rpm.
The time in which it takes to warm up to MIVEC operating temperature can vary a lot. On a hot day with the car in the sun, you can expect to get it there in a few minutes. On a cold night, it's taken me over 20 minutes and I still wasn't there.
I put an oil temp gauge in and that makes it much easier for me to know when the engine is hot enough to put the foot down.
