Those who have had the idel probelm... and fixed
My idel is still messing with me.. i had the stepper motor replaced once and it fixed it but seams to only be for about a year? do they usally die again so quick?
second are my porblems even caused by the stepper motor? i seam to idel alright once the engine is warm and good.. but usally when cold it will just drop out inbetween gears... ie foot on clutch and the car just idels... dangerious because its as im driving around corners and such...
second is if i drive in first gear... it will jerk and what not because its almost like it cuts the reves a little every now and again... also something to do with the idel i believe...
anyone who has suggestions can tell me if this is the stepper motor or any other help ?
thanks heaps guys

thats normalARG wrote:ie foot on clutch and the car just idels...

if you replaced the stepper motor with a 2nd hand original unit its probly another faulty one... the original was made out of aluminium instead of something heat resistant... so they die quickly
its its while ya driving (not idling) maybe fuel pump etc, its not a stepper motor prob

"foot on clutch and the car just idels... " hmm re write with the correct words
"foot on clutch and the car just stalls ... but between gears... like ill clutch to go into second around a bend and the car cuts out.. i find my self restarting the car while trying to steer and still watch for other cars
injecters have had a major clean.... so it shouldnt be them.. as for fuel pump possible but i thought that would make it happen all the time this is 1 in 6 usally when cold though...
probably a second hand idel unit.. bastards! anyone got the price or contact for the new ones?

i've had this problem since i bought my car end of last year , first the alternator died out , recoed it ,the ideling was low. like the car would stall at a traffic light and just die out. the fto was pretty new then so took it to my mechanic who used to fix my silvia, he put in a steppa motor which lasted bout 3-4 months and then problems started again, ie crazy revs , low ideling etc. car stalling and dieing out took it to lee, he said the motor was off a magna and not for an fto, he put in a new steppa motor, since then when i start the car for the first time in the morning i let it run a bit and then start off. when the engine is cold the idel is low, close to like 300-400 rpms. but after it warms up idels a bit lower than 1000 rpm. doesnt stall or die out but i do feel the car doesnt really perform like how it used to. i havent reset the ecu. think if i did would it become any better?

If you want to check if your stepper motor works, take it off when the car is cold. Leave it plugged in and hold it in your hand while someone turns the ignition on your car (don't turn the engine on, just turn the key until all your dash lights come on). When the ignition is turned on, the plunger, which is the size of your little fingure, should retract into the body of the stepper motor. It should go in about a centimetre. If it doesn't move at all, it could be a number of things. ECU, stepper motor, or faulty wiring to name a few. If it just shakes a bit for a second, then it's a wiring problem. Take a close look at the wires that plug into the wiring loom that plugs into the stepper motor. They are on a big angle and are prone to breaking over time.
If you are replacing the stepper motor, don't be ripped off by dodgy wreckers. This part is shared with the Lancer, Mirage, and 4 cyl Magna.
For those having problems, good luck. It took me 6 months to discover I had a broken wire. My mechanic didn't pick it up and neither did his fancy diagnostic equipment. Mine now idles at about 1000rpm when cold and drops to 500rpm when it has warmed up.
