HELP!!! FTO Alternator Woes!!

Post by FtoSam »

Help my 1995 GPX FTO's Alternator is broke!! I think it's the regulator because every now and then my Batt light will flash and the voltage spike. Its also making a nasty whinning/Grinding noise that sounds like bearings. My auto Electrician said $200 for Regulator and another $100 for bearing and another $100 for labour. Thats a $400 alternator!!!not including paying my mechanic $160 to get the little barstard out!!
Anyone know a place that sells new ones? or of a substitute (ie. outta a lancer?). Even if i have to modify the wiring thats fine. as long as it physically fits...

Or would anyone know the dimensions of the unit? I dont wanna spend heaps on getting it out just to measure the barstard.

Or last option is does anyone know a wreckers with an FTO?

mivec engine has special alternator (extra pin for mivec) it does not match any other car.

I can get a second hand one if you can't get it repaired

I can't remember how much mine was. It was under warranty at the time. I'll check my pile of receipts. $1700 seems just a tiny bit rough...

Try giving Northshore Mitsubishi's parts guys a call on (02)9436 0776.
As dannyboyau said - no other alternator is suitable for a mivec. Get a genuine one & if you know a cluey auto sparky (not the thief you've been liasing with!), then you could it modified to get more juice out of it.
