Well, well, well... I did the back set of lifters yesterday.
All I have to say for those kids out there that want to do their GR tappets is DONT!! Give it to your poor mechanic!!
Whatta f@cken nightmare!! Took me about 4 hours, 12 beers and a half pack of smokes. Its painful enough just getting to the back set! Ya gotta rip half the engine out, then once your in, I had to do the old screwdriver job to get em out... I dont reckon you'd be able to buy any sort of spring compressor to get int there. There's not enough room - It'd be easier just to pull the friggen cams out... I was very tempted I tell you...
I swore at the car, kicked the c%nt & barked half my knuckles... BUT
GOD DAMN IT RUNS QUIET NOW!!
End result very pleasing indeed - but definitely get someone else to do it next time.

Truely agreed! I managed to change every lifter by i was so tempted to just leave a couple, as with a screw driver its very hard to stop it from slipping! It would be so much easier with a vavle spring compressor! Yuo can get the tool. The way i rate doing the rear lifters is prob worse than doing the timing belt! Its so time consuming, and without the proper tools, is very frustating. I can get the front lifters easy, but the rears are nightmares!Bennoz wrote:Well, well, well... The group should invest in a tool and pass it around.

I changed my fronts the other day with new Motul 4100 Turblite 10W-40? Damn 1 lifter in the front is ticking sometimes!!!
What the hell? Should i take them out and have a look? Or crap oil??
What oil do you GR guys use? I thought Motul was good? I dont want Magnatec, or Castrol, that stuff leaves gunk under the rocker rovers etc, i dont wanna imagine what else its doing to the engine!
Some shell, mobil?? I tried mobil 1 once didnt like it for the lifters.
thanks
