Be4 I decide on which FTO

Post by DreadAngel »

I'm not too familiar with modifying cars so
laugh if you want... All I know is that
I've always loved the FTO ever since 1994

1. I was wondering I'm in favour of the GPX 95' model because its cheaper but is there any difference between pre 1996 or post 1996 apart from visuals?

2. I'd like to attend trackdays sometime later so a LSD would be nice which had me looking at the GP Version R which had the helical LSD fitted. Can these be fitted to the GPX or can the GPX's Differential be modified to an LSD type?

3. I was thinking about the visual of the FTO and came up with a mix
Front Bumper - Bozz Speed (with the middle bar removed + meshed + the fog lights like from the ftooc gallery)
Side Skirt - Top Mix
Rear Bumper - Hiro or Top Mix
Bonnet - Creative Sports
Spoiler - Creative Sports or Top Mix
To top it all off a lovely carbon fibre lip sounds expensive huh? BUt I'm willing to pay it. I've got more questions but these will decide which ones to add next thanks everyone and try not to go too hard

The later model ones tend to have airbags fitted - either just a drivers one, or a drivers and passengers one.

Also the LSD that comes in the GPvR was an option on the GPX, so if you really luck out you may find a GPX that has one. And they can definitely be retrofitted to the GPX. There was also a limited edition run of GPXs in the mid 90s released to celebrate the FTO winning the Japanese Car of the Year award in 1994 - these were all yellow and all had LSD diffs. However they are extremely rare - I have only ever seen 2 of them, and one was in England!

All those mods sounds great, how ever, most of them you will have isssus finding them! Most of those are pretty rare! And also, it will not be cheap!!

With the LSD, it's also pretty hard to find! haha
GPvR's are nice, i wanted to get one, but it was to expensive for me at the time!

Thanks guys!!! :D More on the visuals mods later, I'm planning two FTOs really (yeah, like when I strike rich hahaha) The GPX will be the 1st FTO, it will be modded both externally (bodykit, rims, wing, lights, etc) and internally (Engine, driveline, suspension, brakes)

1 - I was thinking wouldn't a front cut of a FTO GPvR have all the necessary parts of the LSD transplant or am I missing something? (if anyone can give me an estimate on all the cost of modifications I'm planning please mention them as this will turn out to be a big project)

2 - Is it worthwhile to purchase the 95' Version of the GPX or the post 96' model because I've looked hard around the place and the $$$ between the two varies from about $2K to about $8K depending on kms and modification, because for me, my daily ride would be nicer to have 2 passenger + driver airbag (can these be fitted to the 95' version and how much) and the luxo features compared to the spartan GPvR hence why the GPX manual is the daily and the GPvR later down the track is my trackday car.

3 - A list of modification I have located through my sources and website searching (ones with a * is the ones I want to have for the daily others are for the trackday or deciding still to be fitted on daily, however if I mention something wrong please tell me okay?) Some have prices too... Alternatives in brackets...

just a few things

some of the creative items you have listed, seem great but how are you going to get them? very hard to source, but if you have found somewhere in japan, be prepared for big dollars..

also, some of the UAS items you have listed you have doubled up on a few times..

e.g. UAS Airbox & Snorkle - $395.00 *
UAS CAI Stage 2 - $395.00
UAS Stage 1 & 2 Intake RAM *

these are all the same thing I think...

and also you cant have a K & N airfilter and a UAS Intake rampod....

UAS exhaust stage 1 is also the same as the Creative sports front section (if its the front pipes your referring to).

I might be wrong with some of the above, but if im right will save you some $$ from your budget

Thanks Euro, I've learnt something already, stupid me
For the Creative Items and others in Japan, I have contacts and friends overseas prepared to give me a helping hand plus possibilities of sourcing it from other countries.

So the UAS (A&S) (CAI Stg2) (Stage 1 & 2 Intake RAM) are the same, so which one is all of them combined??? I got lost on the Unique FTO Project site :?

Apart from the questions in the previous post what benifits does the UAS Intake have over the K & N Air Filters or the HKS Superflow?

If you're wanting to get into track days, and think you might really get into it, then my advice would be to spend a lot less money on aesthetics, and a lot more money on the real nuts and bolts stuff. At least hold off on the big spend until after you've given the whole track driving thing a go.

And by "nuts & bolts stuff", I don't mean much on changing engine bits, either. You can spend a bucketload in that area, and not improve your times/skills/enjoyment significantly at all.

For the potential track day addict, here's a list of suggested areas to throw your hard-earned cash at:

Note: this is coming from a serious FTO track addict, hehe. It's basically a list of stuff I wouldn't leave home without in terms of track driving:

- Spare set of stock rims ($200-$400).

- Set of r-comp tyres on above spare rims. Sticky, short lifespan rubber that will absolutely transform your vehicle. Bag 'em and store in the shed when not using them. Do NOT drive around on them day-to-day.

- 12 volt impact wrench, hydraulic trolley jack, for swapping above wheels on/off.

- Good high-temperature brake pads. Pagid blue, Mintex M1155, whatever. Some will squeak annoyingly off the track, but are brilliant when worked hard. $250-$400 for front. A bit less for rears. You'll wear out the front ones fast, but rears will last and last.

- Front brake discs - fit DBA-425S slotted rotors - not too expensive, which is good, as track pads will eat them alive. Under $300.

- Frequent brake fluid flushes. Use good DOT4, or DOT5.1 if you really feel the urge.

- Good major engine service. Make sure all three belts are in really good nick (timing belt, and two drive belts). Get an ultrasonic injector clean. New fuel filter. Good oil (engine, transmission). For GPX, get the valve clearance adjustment job done. You'll probably think twice about the $$$ bling shopping list once you realise how bloody much it costs to properly maintain a "track biatch" vehicle, hehe. I mean, once you've got brakes that cope with a zillion degrees without fading, there'll be nothing to stop you going round and round and round at 8000rpm indefinitely, eh! ;)

- Good quality suspension refit (shocks, springs). Don't go hitting the track on 10-year-old factory FTO shock absorbers. They will be totally dead, and will suck. Feel free to spend whatever you want on suspension! You usually get what you pay for - just use a reputable & knowledgable specialist to set up the car, and you should be okay. Hints: 3cm clearance off the ground is probably not sane, hehe. Some suspension travel is good. Springs like housebricks not necessarily a "performance" plan...! Use someone sensible, ignore "doing it for looks" and it should handle brilliantly.

- For extra suspension geometry tweaks, a set of Pedders adjustable camber bolts and a pair of "extra castor bushes" on the front will give you a very good result, without inducing tyre-shredding camber. Keep your expensive r-comp rubber intact for as long as possible!!! :)

- Fit a 4-point harness. You'll drive better if you're not bouncing around the car.

- Get a pair of racing boots. Not wanky bright red SPARCO "Look at me, I'm a Formula One hero" flame-retardant crap... just a set of normal racing footwear. Buy from somewhere like Revolution Racegear. If they cost more than a set of name brand trainers, you're buying the wrong stuff! Also, if you get beaten up at Macca's on account of your boots as you stop off on the way to the track for a burger, you're buying the wrong stuff! :)

- Don't buy a tiptronic. hehe.

- Regarding the LSD. Hell yeah! Move Heaven and Earth to find an FTO with LSD.

- No big ICE in the boot. Or, if you must, install it in a quick-release removable manner. It'll probably get quick-release-nicked, but at least you won't be decellerating a 5 cubic foot sub enclosure and 4000W amp as you try and learn the finer points of trail-braking! ;)

Hope this helps some!!
