Mitsubishi FTO vs. Nissan Silvia
Hey fellas ive been having an argument for a while with a mate about FTO's and Silvia's.... His argument is that FTO's are cheap sport car rip offs that "dont go hard" and are "sh*t".... He also calls them "wog boxes" which i also dont understand seeing as though its primarily Asian drivers who own and drive them.... Anyway, can someone put this argument to rest...
Are FTO's cheap sport car rip offs
Are FTO's weak and dont go hard...
and are Silvia's better ?

Are we talking about the S13/S14/S15 ?
You really shouldn't be asking this on an FTO forums
I have a freind that has a S14 with 220kw atw, and she gives me sh*t all the time. haha
Nah, it all depepend with what you want the car for, for drags and drift... and RWD fun, silvia gets my vote...

totally depends on the model and year of silvia.. turbo or n/a etc...
the silvias from 95, 96, 97 (which is the same era as the FTO) dont look nearly as good in either the interior or exterior in my opinion. The turbo siliva is of course a lot quicker though.
a more recent silvia probably beats an fto in most areas, but thats because they are a lot newer!

Ok i had few Silvia before FTO, like everyone said that depends on which FTO & which Silvia.
Silvia comes in few version from N/A CA18DE & SR20DE to Turbo CA18DET & SR20DET.
N/A CA18 (1.8L) will get burn by any GR & GPX
N/A SR20 (2.0L) will keep up with a GR & just behind a GPX, but depends on the driver on both side, its a good match.
Turbo CA18, well its almost have the same RW power as the SR20 N/A, so the result is the same as above.
Turbo SR20. Theres not a chance in hell a FTO will beat it, unless the guy can't drive for sh*t.
All the above are base on stock of course, so if you take mods into consideration, such as money vs kwatw, then any turbo Silver will beat any type of FTO. As its so easy to extract heaps more power from purpose build turbo cars with just minor mods.

well actually here comes a tale of two cities for you...
my bro has a s15 with about 195atw kw and he can absolutly trounce my fto most of the time... however, times like saterday night (rained in canberra), we went up and down mt ainsle a few times o and guess who can climb the hill becuase as soon as boost comes on the wheels come off the road in the wet?
but other then that its like callign ah onda type r or a clio sport a pretneder.. total BS.
some people jsut have a simple mantra, RWD beats all, more power the better
but when it all comes down to the facts... each car has its own advantages...
mini cooper? one of the most amazing cars of all time? and what was it? a fwd with a piddly engine? and made to be a cheap econo box to begin with?
name a car ill name its weakness
WRX - got gar box?
GTR - many have problems with the fwd part of the awd system, gear boxs/clutches are very weak from factory as well
Silvia - no boost no go and the na's are a joke

Hmmmm having a turbo doesn't mean is faster, as I pointed out with the CA18DET. And the GTsT I'm driving now can do more KM then my FTO at the moment, so its really depends on the mods, tuning & driving pattern.
But I can see why people keep giving FTO sh*t compare to other similar priced turbo car.
FTO "feel" & "sound" slower. People don't understand that FTO redline is 8250, so even if we rev it to 5-6000 rpm, its nother, it just give the impression of we revving it hard to the max, but in fact we just taking it easy.
I think is a good thing that people under estimate a FTO, as it always manage to surprise people at the lights & twisty. And the looks on their face are just priceless.

I can't how many dirty/suprised looks I've got when pulling off at a green light and going up to 4k or 5k before shifting.

how many times does the FTO get compared to a RWD AND Turbo car?!
bloody ridiculous if u ask me.
He has the nerve to say a FTO is wog box ??? so what the f**k is the Silvia then???
Due to the lack of big name brands such as HKS, Trust, Apexi not having many parts for FTO's , car enthusiasts have tended to stay away from them. From that, others 'think' they are worthless to even touch
I was highly scrutinised by my friends when i first bought the FTO. Now some of them dont want to see me sell it!
and with the comment about turbo cars in twisties. It all depends how the cars tuned. Having a car tuned for track and street can change the outcome of a race. I also drive a MR2 Turbo and i would whoop any FTO in the twisties.

To me, the FTO is a car that prefers not to talk about dragstrip slipcards rather how it behaves taking on the touge (mountain pass) and circuits even rallies eg Targa Tasmania. I enjoy the look of the FTO, its quite refreshing, similar to the JZA80 Supra to some. A car similar to the FTO in status is actually the Honda NSX, its critised as not having enough grunt to stick it with turbo cars but thats not the point of the NSX. The point of both cars is finesse, the better the driver is able to control the car, as long as its not a straight line its got excellent pace.
Yes, the lack of turbo is something that deters people from looking towards the FTO but the High revving NA and insurance cost is something eh? And Yes it does lack the parts from famous tuning brands but why? Because out of the factory, the FTO's components are quite competent at what's expected of them plus the brands mentioned before focus on highly modifiable cars eg Silvias, Skylines, Supras, etc.
For pricing, think of the others cars as competent and the FTO as 'Helluva more developed' except timing belts hahaha
As an asider, officially the FTO can do 100kms with 11L of fuel eh?

Well the 2nd gen 3.2 NSX with the facelift (as 3.2L also comes in 1st gen)actually beat a R33 GTR at 1/4 miles, both stock as well
it was in one of the Japanese Best Motoring video.
So NSX isn't as slow as some people might think.

I've said this in the past but i'll say it again. As turbos and big CC cars are everywhere its hard for people not to compare the FTO to them. People dont compare just cars in it class but to everything. They have a big V8 the FTO is slow, same for turbo drivers. They dont really care its only a 2 litre, all they know if their car is faster. Magazines compare cars in its class, and usually FTO have a great wrap. But this is reality 95% of people dont care if its FWD or RWD how big the engine is etc. All they care about is their car is quicker!FTOluv wrote:how many times does the FTO get compared to a RWD AND Turbo car?!![]()
