40 or 45??

40 or 45??
hi guys, i want to buy a 17" alloy for my gpx. should i use tyre with profile 40 or 45? thanks...

yeh 40-series would be quite bumpy... hell i got 45-series on mine and it's already very bumpy for me (with stock shocks and Prof sport springs). at the end of the day, the ride quality will depend very much on the shock/springs, but in terms of looks an 18" rim would look great on a 40-series profile

i just picked up a set of falkens, andthey are ok, cept in the wet ithe wheels spin heaps, i was spinnin through 2nd and didnt evennotic till i put my foot downand the wheels spun at over 100kmh and i wasnt moving! i used to usedunlop formulas, it was reccomended to me,andthey grip really well,but i gothrough a set every month. there doesnt seem to be a happy median

Switching to Bridgestone G3s is the smartest move i've done to my car... it has excellent grip in wet or dry conditions and very good balance between road noise and wear.
I've used Falkens many times before and yes although they grip very well in dry, it's just hopeless in the wet... I've tried Dunlops before and quite frankly, i can't afford to change tyres every 25000kms (and this was fitted on a Lancer PoS too by the way).

I drive on Bridgestone Potenza GIIIs too
Their grip is excellent, even in the wet. I was advised against Falkens because they are crap in the wet.
Those Melbournians out there should know the famous S bend of Princess Highway underneath the train tracks next to Caulfield station. That's a very good place to test your tires
Disclaimer: i don't recommend u doing it with all 3 lanes full of cars.
As for 40 or 45 profiles.... I drive on 45s and there has been a small loss in drive comfort compared to the stock 50s. 40s are too thin if u have anything smaller than 18" wheels. There would be an unsightly gap between the wheels and the arches, unless u lower your ride.

Errr, I don't think falken's are crap in the wet, but I don't have anything to benchmark them against =)
I can do a fair bit with them without them stepping out . . . but then again I've never been to a race and actually tried to make them lose grip, but for street they seem fine to me *shrugs*
Guess I should try other Semi-comp tyres at some point =)

dude, i thought you had Falken Azenis semi-slicks fitted on your FTO? i guess i should've mentioned that the Falken tyres I was talking about were the GRBs and ZE502s... compared to what I'm running on now, the GRBs and ZE502s are hopeless but never tried the Azenis though... might give them a go during track days sometime...MADFTO wrote:Errr, I don't think falken's are crap in the wet, but I don't have anything to benchmark them against =)

i have falken firenza st-03s at the moment, they are not actually marketted for australia, but for US i think...
they are made in japan, they grip very well and have very low noise
i havent pushed them in the wet though... i always drive carefully in the rain... but thats just me.... they do spin on a wet, uphill start on uneven roads but then which tyre doesnt??
for $130 (for the stock rims) a tyre who can complain.
