I'm 19
Thus I'm a P Plater.

I've had my car since October and I've not once had an incident with a police officer.......I've driven past RTA Vehicle Inspection sites and RBT's without even a second glance.

I don't display my P plates and drive around like Canberra is a race track (no excessive speeding however) yet I've never had any kind of attention.

From the cops that is.....I often get the finger from P Platers in slower cars when I overtake......snobs!

As I bought outright and own 100% of my car I tend to baby it heavily, whereas a lot of P Platers are given money from Mum or Dad (or inheritance) and thus the car might not mean as much to them.

A few of my P plater friends also have high performance imports (R33, WRX) and we care for our cars waaay too much to go doing stupid crap on the roads.....while others in their commodores don't really care (evident by the dents in their car).

While I was on my P plates I had no major issues with the cops. I did get pulled over for doing more than 15kph over the limit and for having my plates displayed incorrectly (I had a P plate at the rear but u couldn't see it), but I managed to talk my way out of it and got away with nothing. He gave me a hard time at first, but once we talked a bit more I think we came to a mutual understanding. :)

People are responsible for their actions but due to the media there have been a lot of crackdowns on sports cars in the last 5 years.
Back in '99 my friends and I use to go down to St Kilda beach on summer nites and the car parks there were full of cars and young people enjoying themselves without doing anything stupid. So what do the cops do, they pull up in one car and tell everyone to leave or they'll canary cars.
Everyone was suddenly quiet... just staring with anger at the cops. What happened next wasnt good... suddenly one person piffed their plastic Coke bottle and the cop car, then someone else threw a Big Mac burger and in the matter of seconds around 30 people were piffing their food and drinks at the cop car!! The sight of this was amazing 8O The two cops in the car were helpless. They were surrounded by 200 people and crap thrown at their car! :P It was really funny for the 30 seconds it lasted, but as soon as it stopped i knew everyone was gonna be in for it. The cops immediately called for back up and everyone jumped into cars to leave the car park. Obviously with such a huge number trying to leave there were a lot of cars that were caught and canaried. :x
Next weekend my friend and i drove down there again to see if anything was happening and saw that the council and modified the car park to block mass numbers of cars getting in and out. Since then going down to St Kilda on a summer nite has never been the same again. All I see now are idiots racing on the main rd and getting pulled over  This has made me think twice about going down there as i dont wanna get blasted for no reason like i did the other week.
So if there is fairness in that, i would like to know why

Kaz, it's called TESTOSTERONE, and a majority of males between 18-23 are full of 'em... and as you know, testosterone & hi-powered imports don't mix, so what do you get? a recipe for a timebomb on wheels...

i'm not saying every tom, dick & harry between 18-23 y/o out there are fully sick testosterone-charged men - many p-platers i know do the right thing but you just cannot ignore the simple fact that there are stubborn fcuks out there who are hell-bent on giving the scene a bad rep with the community and authorities, and that is why we are suffering from such prejudices today...

i say if you do something wrong yourself, take it on the chin and face the consequences. if you have done nothing wrong, exercise some common courtesy and if you come across any abuse of power, you have your rights as a citizen afterall...

I do apprieciate such a strong response to this topic. I think that it shows there definately is a problem there, and at present, its not being solved. As a P-plater myself, i must admit, a large majority of us show immature behavior when driving ( myself included ). If i get caught then, i gladly agree with the consequences. i dunno.. u could say we are adding to the problem.. but, the police are harrassing the innocent aswell.. I want you to imagine that suddenly people with the same backround as u.. (asian, greek.. whatever).. had a bad repuation for drug dealing.. and every time u walked the streets at night, u were followed by police, and arrested because u j-walked, or littered. Same feeling here. anyone agree or at least understand what i mean?

Hey GPXXX, I know all about TESTOSTERONE I live in a house with three males including my husband. My concern is that I have a son who will probably be driving in around 3 years time so I'd love to see a solution to this TESTOSTERONE overload. We tell him that if he wants to test his limits and/or the limits of his car we will pay for advanced driver training and take him out to WSID. I dont know the solution but I do expect him to take responsibilty for his actions on the road - as I expect with everything he does!

i reckon a solution to testosterone overload is a change in attitude... but how do you change their attitude? I have no answer for this because I am not qualified to give psychological assessments or opinions but IMO attitude starts at home. On top of that, my past experiences have shown that ppl's attitude changes when something truly profound occurs in their lifetime - some tragic and some less tragic (but the pain will last a lifetime nevertheless).

advanced driver training is prob not the best method in my opinion, because it opens up a world of possibilities for young drivers to explore the limit of their cars and exploit it in the real world. you can look at it from different angles but at the end of the day no matter how much training they get, it ultimately comes down to the driver's attitude, or for some it's called ego. but hey, if it can really change their driving behaviour & attitude about their own abilities, their car's limits and other variables to save even just one life, then i'm all for it...

djay, you just have to accept the fact that we are all hard done by not just because of our own actions, but because of the irresponsible actions of other immature fcuks out there who brought shame to the modified/import car culture... switch to a stock-std Daihatsu Mira with your P-plates and let's see how often you get pulled over compared to your FTO...

Guys, most of us know all about that incident. It is a good point regarding that accident. But let's not go into the details again about EVLR34... there is a thread about it already somewhere.

I think we should stay relativly on topic

I think the laws for getting your L's & P's should be much harder then what they are. Because at the moment. Getting L's especially is so easy. like my brother got them on the first try, and he doesn't even know the road rules proply :!:

I believe the reason why EVLR34 was brought up is to highlight the point about the dangerous mix of P-platers and hi-po cars... with or withouth driver education, it's all about attitude and obviously the poor kid who killed himself didn't care much for his own safety and others... therefore i done see why it's not relevant in this discussion...

but i agree with you boris - the licensing system is a joke. To quote Bruce Lee's immortal words:

"Knowing is not enough, we must apply..."

so me vs cop in court... i dont like my chances

since i have a veilside bodykit and debadged car i think its attracting a lot more attention than a regular fto (no offence meant to anyone), maybe thats why i get pulled over all the time...

hahaha its testosterone + hi performance car + trance music thats the bad mix

havent you people experienced driving a lot faster when you listen to some fast trance or hardcore techno?
