Popping out the driveshaft from the gearbox - why so hard?
We need to remove the auto box before the engine comes out for rebuild and will be putting a manual box back in after.
I've got one of the driveshafts out as the inner rubber had split but it's left the inner bit still in the box.
The drivers side inner boot looks good though so didn't want to cut it if I didn't have to but I've had a pry bar in and it doesn't want to move and I was unsure of how much force to apply as I didn't want to break anything.
Should I just cut the boot and pull it out and leave the other bit still in the box - will the box clear everything and come out like this?
Or is there a knack to getting the inner out with the pry bar like does anything have to line up, has to be in neutral etc or do I just apply more force?

Try a screw driver and hit the end of the screwdriver at a 90degree angle, this is how I used to get all mine out, they're in there quite tight and I found especially tight on autos, must be a girl thing

Ok will do, I reckon the rotating thing might be the trick as I haven't tried that. Will have at it with the pry bar again and this time use the hammer too.

I use a ball joint splitter fork. Couple of whacks with the lump hammer & she'll come (no pun)

Yep ball joint splitter or hammer a fat chisel into the space between the box and CV cup.
I fix cars.

Yeah sorta. I use them but often even on a hoist they can be difficult to remove with pry bars.
You need a big f**k off fat cold chisel type thing. Something you can hammer up in there. Ball joint splitter as Bennoz suggested.
When you try with the prybar, get the two larger ones and apply equal force on opposite sides of the cup. If you have the car on a hoist (I assume you dont?) you can just wedge the prybar in there and then crash tackle the c**t

Righto, in that case might be a bit difficult with pry bars. Maybe you could wedge it in and kick it or you may have to smack a chisel or something up there as mentioned.
Or if you're feeling very creative and are super cautious with it you may wedge the pry bar/chisel in and then jack the car up, take the stands out and lower the car onto it. But that would be a super last resort thing and I would only try that after at least an hour of swearing

I've only spent 5 minutes of swearing on it so far so not nearly enough.Daniel2019 wrote:Righto, in that case might be a bit difficult with pry bars. Maybe you could wedge it in and kick it or you may have to smack a chisel or something up there as mentioned.

But, I have a hoist and a big chisel.
Have never used method of lowering the car as I suggested, but I'm trying to think of a way around it while being under a car with no space. We aren't all Ronnie Coleman, you know.

I left it to Rowan and he's popped them out without too much trouble, I must be getting old.
