ahhh f**k... Pretty sure I thew out my timing.
So as I was doing the tappets and I was constantly hand cranking the engine forward and backward and then all of a sudden it wouldn't let me turn anymore in one direction and I tried the other direction and about half a rotation later that was stuck too, so I only have about half a rotation of movement between 2 points. My first thought is timing is out and valve hitting piston kinda feels like it, its a very solid stop, not elasticky like if there was something jamming the belt and it had a bit of play.
Apparently hand cranking the car backwards can on rare occasions cause the timing to go out, either that or I dropped something down their by accident and it got sucked into the belt.
Soooo how do I go about correcting this the easiest possible way, I know u guys will tell me to buy all new belt, water pump, tensioners etc and do the whole thing, but the last owner said he did it about 20,000k ago and the belt looks pretty fresh so I believe him. It must have been the crank that slipped, cus when I turn the engine over the cams are right in front of my face so im pretty sure if something funky happened there I would have seen it.

Umm, didn't you say you had the cams out? Or was that on a different engine?

Re: ahhh f**k... Pretty sure I thew out my timing.
If you were cranking from the crank shaft and not the cam shafts and you were taking it easy, it is unlikely that you slipped the belt.
My suggestion is to take out the spark plugs. If you are in that area, it should be easy to do and if it is then easy to rotate then what you were feeling is the compression of the engine.
The timing is easy to verify (once you can spin your engine) but an absolute pain to change, rule out everything else first before attempting it.

I doubt it, I cranked it over heaps before, and I felt the compression and could hear the hissing of the air escaping, this is a lot different its mechanical and I can hear a knock when it stops.Dras wrote:If you were cranking from the crank shaft and not the cam shafts and you were taking it easy, it is unlikely that you slipped the belt.

I've never done timing before, my understanding is you take the belt of, get everything to line up with the timing marks then put the belt back on and crank it over couple times to see if they all line up on every pass?

You didn't put a bolt in the hold behind one of the Cams?
We did this to stop it jumping too much, and forgot about it when trying to turn the engine over my hand and was wondering what we were hitting... woops...

Any good guides on doing the timing belt?

It does explain, just need to follow different parts of the manual.
The 2 workshop manuals and engine manual pretty much guide you through stripping the entire car down and putting it back together.

Seriously it is a pain in the a** to do the timing.
If you are doing the tappets anyway, why not remove all the tappets (assuming non-mivec engine). This will stop any of the valves from being depressed and nothing will hit anything. This will let you bring everything to top dead centre and check if the timing is correct without needing to remove the belt

You didn't just over adjust the tappet causing the valve to be depressed when it shouldn't be?

Re: ahhh f**k... Pretty sure I thew out my timing.
Ok I dont even know anymore... wtf is going on, I slid the belt of the cams and pulled out the cams so every valve is 100% retracted then removed all the spark plugs and it still wont turn over, it stops when piston 2 and 6 are at the top of their stroke in both clockwise and anticlockwise directions
rear 1-2-4
front 4-5-6
When I removed the the manifold I covered the intake with a rag immediately so I cant imagine how anything could have fallen into there and be blocking the piston from completing its cycle and I also couldn't see anything when I shined a light down the spark plug holes (though u can only see a small portion of the piston through the hole)
Any ideas on wtf is going on here?
