Alternator confusion
My alternator died in Wagga - problem is I'm back in Melbourne and the mechanic in Wagga wants me to source the part for them. I have pics which show a 2 pin alternator, but according to a mechanic friend, it should be a 4 pin. I am very confused and don't know what to get. I have a 1995 2L V6 Mivec - can anyone help me please

Can anyone tell me how the hell a 2 pin was then what was taken out?? I would have thought it wouldn't work, but I'm no mechanic obviously

Re: Alternator confusion
Fairly sure you may be able to use a 2 pin (non mivec) alternator in a mivec. Just means that mivec won't work I think.

Well just found that early grs had 2 pins so that's what my girl has. She is painful but I love her!

Re: Alternator confusion
All non mivecs had two pin alternators I think. Are you sure you have a mivec? Do you have a GR or a GPX?

Re: Alternator confusion
OK, in that case your car is a non-mivec and you need the two pin alternator.

Re: Alternator confusion
Right..
Either you have a GR with a Mivec engine swap done to it, a standard GR or you actually have a GPX or Version R.
If your engine is a mivec then you need the four pin alternator.
If your engine is not mivec, then you need the two pin alternator.
Engine bay pics would help if you have them. Is the oil cap on the driver's side or passenger's side of the engine?

I can't remember which side the cap is on but I figure if they took a 2 pin out then only a 2 pin should go back in

Two pin. But if you have a mivec then you need a four pin. Unless your loom has been hacked up.
Really need to know what kind of engine you have...

Re: Alternator confusion
I can do a 2 pin one if you end up going down that path, but not a 4.

Re: Alternator confusion
I just had mine replaced, i purchased a new 2pin for $210 for my GPX, some mivec's have 2 pin, and the newer ones have 4pin had to send mine back and get a 4 pin, for $396 (4pin) new with 5 years warranty. (prices are delivered) might get cheaper if you go down to the shop, they have everything in stock already.

Re: Alternator confusion
Thanks to everyone. I'm still having trouble getting it sorted. If I end up being able to bring her back to Melbourne can anyone advise the best place to take her. I don't think her regular mechanic is the best option....
