I got under the Galant this arvo for my first look and I found a fair bit of work to be done.
Nearly all the same things that I have done to the FTO

List, parts are being quoted/ordered...
Steering pump
Steering rack
All coolant hoses and thermostat
Radiator
Rocker cover gaskets and spark plug seals
Spark plugs
Transmission wave spring incl seals
Rear engine seal
Transfer case seals
Timing belt incl pulleys, tensioner, water pump.
Acc belts
Lower control arms, complette units incl arms, bushes and ball joints *4
Center console latches *2
Gear stick trim
Rear pillar interior light fittings *2
New key with central locking buttons

I am hoping to get away with it for about $2500

My partner has a VR-4...the possibilities..if only I were more mechanically inclined..

And damn you've got a lot of work to do.

I'm guessing a bunch of things are shared with the FTO, at least it's not unfamiliar territory there.

Yes, similar setup although slightly different parts.

It's a known weak part. Super expensive if it lets go & bricks the box, always best done as preventative maintenance.

How hard is it to do the wave spring?
My daily driver is a 2003 Mitsubishi Verada which also has a known weak wavespring

Thanks Bennoz I'll read through it.
Though from what I understand in a Verada the transmission has to come out to replace the wavespring. Not sure how true this is or not

The alternative is the wave spring going and a 4.5K transmission repair bill like I had. I know which id rather.

I think though the reality of the matter is even if this is a common issue, it's not all that common, ie, the chances of it going might be less than 1 in 10?

What car was that on Dwayne, your VR4?

It's not so common anymore because Mitsubishi upgraded the part.

So the solution to the problem is essentially a revised OEM part.

I meant even in the transmission fitted with the non-revised part, it wasn't THAT common for it to fail?
I mean, considering how many Magnas are still on the road?

Yes spetz I intend doing the wave spring DIY.
I am a mechanic after all, if I can rebuild a tractor transmission then the galant one should be a piece of cake
I don't have to remove the box to do it, but I'm removing it anyway to replace the rear engine seal and to replace the tranny internal filter.
Also the job will actually be easier to complette once the box is out.
If I find that the spring has already been changed I will still have piece of mind.

It's easy to say that after the fact, but when I did my FTO one that info was not known, until hours after trying to remove it.
