Re: Ill be the Guinea Pig - Looking into Vinyl Wrapping
That's the only part I was wondering as well, most cars have a separate section for the roof. Hopefully dstocks' car sheds some light on how it's done.Vectose wrote: Awesome, only thing that would bother me is that it needs joins between the guards and rear pillars.
EDIT: Actually, I think you will need one in the roof as well (or two if you go with the indents to make it less visible). As I think the sheets are 60" wide and don't cover the entire roof and pillars. Not 100% sure on this though. This is of course with 3M Vinyl, other brands might have larger sizes.

You can get wide enough pieces.
There is a place near me that when I enquired on doing a wrap on ours explained how it would be done.
Not giving away much, but the roof was 1 piece. Seam line was where the roof line met the rear guard section.

Might not have been 3M though. As when I was looking at vinyl, 3M had a max width of 60" and that is not enough to go from the top of one rear guard to the other.
As I said, other brands might have larger sizes.

Re: Ill be the Guinea Pig - Looking into Vinyl Wrapping
What was the brand of vinyl wrap they were using? 3M seems to be the most expensive, and best quality from what I've seen. But yeah, as mentioned 60" is the widest it can go. Pondering whether to choose a different roof colour, but I don't think it suits FTO's.Astron_Boy wrote:You can get wide enough pieces.

Re: Ill be the Guinea Pig - Looking into Vinyl Wrapping
The specialist I consulted over the weekend uses Hexis. And yes apparently there are lengths that are able to cover the roof and pillars without having to join. Handy to know!

They do have colours, but in my opinion, vinyl looks better, lasts longer and there is a much larger range of colours.

+1. If you have a decent installer, it often comes with 3-5yrs warranty which is pretty cool, as opposed to doing it yourself.Vectose wrote:They do have colours, but in my opinion, vinyl looks better, lasts longer and there is a much larger range of colours.

Re: Ill be the Guinea Pig - Looking into Vinyl Wrapping
But then you compare the cost of the two, you're looking around 300-400 NZD for the paint, and you can easily do it yourself.
I may try see if I can get it cheaper through work, and see if I can do it before the South Island Champs.
At least then my bumper may match :p

3M vinyl will cost $600-700 AUD and you can do it yourself.
Other brands could be even cheaper.

Re: Ill be the Guinea Pig - Looking into Vinyl Wrapping
I wouldn't try the wrapping, personally. I'm bad enough at putting screen protectors on...
Over here the cheapest local quote we got for 3M wrapping, about a year ago, was around 2000-4500...

Re: Ill be the Guinea Pig - Looking into Vinyl Wrapping
For my roof and pillars, I was quoted $500 with three years warranty by a local installer. Was pretty impressed with that
