DIY Guide for Adjusting PS and Alternator belt

Post by shadowarrior »

Would really appreciate if someone has a DIY guide with pictures to adjust the PS and Alternator belt. The car has developed a little bit of screeching noise when I start the car or slowly accelerate on 1st gear which lasts for a second (Happens 60% of the time). I think adjusting those belts should take care of the noise?

Cheers,
Sidds

Put a new belt on mate. If it screeches, it's cooked.

When my "mechanic" did mine, it screeched the day after I got it back. Brand new belts.

Alternatively you can actually go to a place called Mike Hunt Industries and they sell a product called Anti-Screech for York Hunt and after you give it a good belting it should go away.

The workshop manual covers the procedure pretty well.

My tip however is to use a guitar tuning apparatus to test for the belt tension. The workshop manual describes the frequency at which each belt should vibrate when plucked.

I use a free app on my Android phone called G-String with the wired hands free microphone that was included with my phone.

Also, aim for the lower end of the acceptable band of frequencies as it will increase when you tighten up the pulleys.
Me? Bitter? f**k no. I think it's hilarious.

Yes... except I took it to a mechanic to avoid something like that happening

I was trying to do the right thing. From now on I'm going to try and do most things myself. As Phil069 said - "Ave-a-go-ya-mug"
I fix cars.

Or just use the other process in the manual which states 10kgs of force in the middle on the longest span between pulleys should be roughly should be +/-10mm.

Dude your belts are fine! It's because you drove to Sydney and back in monsoon rain and it's your first week driving the FTO non stop really... If it squeaks again just nip up the tensioner...

Sahin! You can't just go around Willy Nilly tightening tensioners mate!

We all need to sit around on the forums discussing this for at least another 20 pages.
