How much punishment does the gearbox get?
And, when you take the gearbox out, do you support the motor with something?
How do you lift the gearbox back into place?

Re: Bennoz 6A13 Conversion
I don't flog it hard, the damage is done by the odd heavy take off. The bearings just can't handle the torque load. The gear cluster itself & the syncros are fine. I can't remember what my torque figure was, but it was something like 450 odd Nm.spetz wrote:How much punishment does the gearbox get?

Yeah I leave the jack under the motor. I just lower it down on the passenger side to slide the box on & off. I leave the timing belt end mount connected as a pivot point.
Depending on whether I've got the communal engine hoist at home, I can use that to lift it into place, otherwise I just hand lift it in with the aid of another jack. They're not that heavy.

I'm a pretty skinny guy and I managed to lift a manual gearbox out my boot, up the driveway and I to my bedroom in one go. They are a fair chunk of metal but it is manageable with one person.spetz wrote:I remember you said it was 50kg which is still quite heavy.

Forgive my mind slipping... much like your gearbox.
But how is it the Legnum/ Galants boxes can withstand the punishment but the FTO box can't?
I know of a few worked Legnums pushing some decent figures, and even then the gearboxes with-hold.
It can't simply be the factor of a transfer case....?

Yes moving it around wouldn't be a problem but I was interested in the removal and installation part considering the awkward position Bennoz would be in (no innuendo intended) and the danger of it falling etcShhtuart wrote:I'm a pretty skinny guy and I managed to lift a manual gearbox out my boot, up the driveway and I to my bedroom in one go.
