Replacing Troublesome Tappets

Post by mrx »

My baby is going in for major service on Saturday. Finally sold our other car so thought I may as well get it done now. Taking it to UAS, but that is not what I was posting about...

Noisy tappets are the bane of my life! Ever since the cam seals were replaced by the dodgy mechanics that the dealer I bought the car from said I had to use, the tappets have been noisy as hell! I am sure many of you can attest to this.

We did actually reset them once, and it was silky smooth, quiet and far more powerful and responsive!

This lasted about 2 days before a couple of them went back again. It is only a couple on the rear bank that are the problem. The front bank seems fine. Is it worthwhile getting just those ones replaced? Would a good clean do the trick? Is it cost effective?

I know these topics have been covered before, but they have generally been a diversion from the original post so are hard to find again. I guess the guys at UAS would be the best to talk too, but just after you guys opinions/experience.

Is it a Mivec ?
Noisy tappets/lifters absolutly annoy me too, i never had any problems when i first got the car, mine seem to get noisy when the oil has done around 5,000 kms.
Are your tappets only noisy when its cold ? you could try a magnetic oil but i have heard of performance decreases from doing so
what sort of oil do you use ?
I heard getting your hands on new tappets are very expensive and not really worth it.
There must be a reason why if you adjust them they do not stay at that setting a week later.
I have the luxery of self adjusting tappets (non mivec engine) but they are just as noisy. Its strange im not sure how the engine re adjusts them but when i start the car a few of them will be noisy and then one by one they quiten down

get them to properly set your tappets when its in there...

they've got all the tools and have done this now to a heap of MIVEC's so it should be resolved once and for all (unless the tappets are damaged in anyway and then its a different problem)
