Car Selling Scams
Guys for anyone selling a car at the moment, be aware of emails about a bloke from New Zealand Taranaki Basin on Kapo project expressing interest.
I got an email from them and did a quick google because he apparently wanted to pay directly to my bank account or through paypal and it just seemed really fishy.. turns out they make up some bullshit excuse about a transfer fee they cant pay because theyre offshore and cant get to a post office.
I will upload the email when I get to my PC or you can just google it.

Re: Car Selling Scams
Thanks a lot for the email. I am buying it for my son who just graduated ontop of his class in Australia national university (ANU) .He studied Business Law and Professional Ethics Minor and am so proud of him .i want it as a surprise package to appreciate him towards his achievement and to be delivered before my arrival NT as my family lives in NT presently
I work with AWE New Zealand Pty Ltd and we are presently offshore in New Zealand Taranaki Basin on kapo project. We do not have access to phone at the moment, its 15days off and 15days on,which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility. Where is it located at the moment?Does it have any history I should be aware of? and why are you selling if you don't mind my asking.I am already in talks with the courier that will handle the pick-up and delivery it in NT.
As regards the payment, I can pay you through direct bank deposit, using ppal instant bank wire transfer service as i have my N.A.B account attached to my ppal account, I will need your bank details to the transfer EFT and If you are not comfortable with that, you can set up a paypal account proper at www.paypal.com.au and I will make the payment through paypal, this way, all I will need is your paypal email address.
Cheers!!

Re: Car Selling Scams
If you get the payment through PayPal, it is safe though..
Want for funds to clear and all is well. The scam was usually the other way round, but you were encouraged to use Escrow or Western Union.. For a car that was meant to be "at the docks"..
How does this scam work?

My gf received the same email within the first couple of days of putting her AU Fairmont on gumtree. Seemed a bit strange so she never replied.

They say they cant pay a 900 dollar or something fee to the company transporting the vehicle to their home (NT) as they are offshore and cant get to a post office and can only transfer funds electronically to you, and ask you to pay it while they just add the money to their purchase price and never give the money.

Re: Car Selling Scams
I have had similar problems with selling my motorcycle before, basically they use a hijacked Paypal account with funds attached to it and they transfer funds to you. You hand over the car to this 'courier'. Meanwhile the true owner of the paying account (realizing it has become unsecure) gets in touch with Paypal and freezes the funds in your account. He gets his money back and some random chop-shop has your car/bike. Paypal can't help you recover your vehicle sadly.
Here is the latest con-artist trying to scam me:

Thanks for the swift response. Am really impressed in purchasing and i need to make the payment right away as i need it urgently and kindly inform if you have other items for sale as i need some stuff for my new apartment and also am not in state right now and am willing to make payment via PayPal or bank transfer to your account and as well pick up will be made by a shipping company once payment is made to your account. Kindly get back to me with your paypal email address or bank details i.e bank name, account number and bsb so i can proceed with payment and pick up can as well be made immediately. I shall be waiting on your soonest mail once you receive my message.
Thanks and please kindly inform other buyers it is already sold.
Be blessed.

No matter how hard they try there's still always the little bits of broken English in there.
