Inner Wheel Clearance

Had a look with the search function, but couldn't find anything conclusive. Has anyone determined how much more the width of wheel/tyre can extend inside till it starts hitting things?

Mm, I know this much, but was looking more for a measurement in millimetres. I've been using willtheyfit.com and day-dreaming about some rims. I know that negative offest will require fender rolling etc, but am not sure about the insides.

It depends on a few things.
For example at the front if you run coilovers you may get more clearance, though tires will likely rub on full lock either way.
At the back I think there is less space as the trailing arm will get in the way.

Could not give accurate measurements though.

I guess it would be a little bit fiddly to get in there. I know that TohmeZ stuffed 18x9.5 +20 with 225/40 tyres in, and they have a 20mm inset above stock. Don't recall him mentioning things on the inside, only rolling the guards, as you'd have to. fto-007 fit 18x8.5 with +25 front and +20 rear, not sure what tyre size though.

If I could do anything, I'll be wanting to get some 18x9.5 +12 running 245/35. Like the look of some of the fender flares I've seen on some FTOs, not the full widebody, just the arches.

I have tohmez wheels now. I had to grind down the seam in the wheel arch and they scrub on absolute full lock.

The guards have to be rolled and preferably pulled/flared, and have to run a bit of camber all round. I have yet to do this. When funds allow.

Ah, true. Hoping I can avoid any inner problems by a rolling diameter closer to stock and more negative offset. Then it's just the flares to worry about. This being said, I haven't actually picked up the FTO yet, so it's all speculative.

Have you looked into what the cost of flares would be?

I think getting a wide arch kit would be a better option. But then id feel that it'd be a lot of work. I'm just going to pull the guards and roll and add more camber, saves having major body work like spraying panels and fiberglass etc.

True. Flares would look pretty good though, and I'm guessing they wouldn't be much more costly than a bumper to fit. all depends on the money I suppose!

I think if u need flares your gonna need to cut the quarter panel up higher so the wheel doesn't scrub on the arch and your going to have more issues with it scrubbing on the insides.

Even if the inset is only like 10mm more than stock? I know the panels would need to be cut.

I'm sure 1cm isn't all that different but its not the only factor to consider you have offset, rim height, rim width, tyre width and profile.

It gets complicated once u hit 18's and going past 8" on rim width.

That doesn't particularly surprise me given that it's a 9.5 inch wide rim with only +20 offset. but I'd be running a lower offset and a 35 series as opposed to a 40 tyre. sticks out more but less in. guess if I ever find money I'll figure it out.

That's massive. I've got 1.2mm between rim & Brembo caliper

I'm sure you could sand the inside of the wheel down to get that to at least 1.3mm.

Brembo's are made in a way that they don't swell with heat like other callipers, so you only need 1mm clearance between them and the rim.

Huh, interesting. Didn't know calipers did that.

I'm not sure if such a small distance between moving parts is more or less concerning than it is between tyre/suspension.
