help!

Post by destinationtoby »

replacing shocks, springs, drop links and got a new rear sway bar from ultra racing to put on. however, the rear droplinks wont come off ! they are not like the front ones with the 17m nut on the back and front, theres one on the front and the backing is just round and the whole lot just spins! driving me insane, is this normal? is there a knack to it?

also i got some shocks and lowered springs from taz, they are ment to only lower the car to about 140mm off the ground and be fairly practical + legal. after fitting them straight on, the front is sitting about 60mm off the friggin ground and the 17"s are rubbing bigtime! the passenger side more so.

so ive basically accomplished nothing, the car is pretty much undriveable. any tips on what i may have done wrong to have the car so low?or have i fitted shocks wrong? will lower profile tyres fix ?

Theres not much you can do wrong fitting a whole strut and spring combo - 3 bolts on top, 2 down the bottom and it slides right out/in.
There must be something up though - with stock wheels and tyre profiles i was sitting about 130-140 at the stock facelift bar, about 110 at the bottom of the crossmember, and they were taken out of my car less than a month ago. No rubbing etc, they were fine.
Perhaps get another member come round and check all your work/look for the problem etc? Few boys down in sydney know what a few things.
Hope this gets resolved :?

You need to use a spanner to hold the rear nut in place while you turn the one closest to you.

Also what front bumper do you have and what width are your 17s and tyre profile?

I'm sitting on 17x7 with 214/45 and RSR lowering springs and have perfect turning with no rub.

You need to hold the droplink shaft with an allen key and undo the locknut with a spanner.

Hmmm, my stock rear GPvR droplinks (same as GPX) had 2 nuts. If that fails use some pliers to get a firm grip on them. Or angle grind 8)

yeah too wide and thick, you could try spacers but with an 8" you might be poking out the guard a bit too much.

it doesnt look too bad there but it is. it seems like the constant rubbing is the tyre on the bottom part of the strut thats ment to sit just above the tyre. is there any way of adjusting the strut base?

Those are KYB direct replacement struts as well - which are the same as stock. What suspension were you using before?

BTW, some droplink shafts are held with a spanner on the backing spacer.

Changing the springs won't change the distance from the tyre to the struts' lower spring seat. This distance is fixed, it's below the spring and below the struts' compressive movement.

yep - springs wont change anything to do with the rubbing at all, it MIGHT fix the height, although i doubt it - as they are still lowered springs - and so are yours. Im not sure of what could be different to set the car down so far compared to mine - the suspension to the hub is exactly the same. Something just doesnt add up here.
I would wait for someone to come around and assess the situation before doing anything.
Coilovers might get rid of the scrub as they are much more discreet but if theres another problem at play here who knows.

yea tru. ive read a couple things about the 'lower spring seat' needing to be properly aligned when re-fitting, could be something to do with that. im just gonna go get low profile tyres and see how they go, if they dont go, well im just gonna put ski's on it and buy some snowdogs or reindeers or sumthing to get around.

The lower spring seat is welded to the strut, it can't be moved. You need to align the upper spring seat to match the lower. They both have a small hole drilled into the dish, these need to be aligned with each other.
Make sure your rubbing is actually coming from the lower spring seat before you spend moar cash.
