Gearbox syncros gone....

Post by tschirmer »

I'm pretty sure my gearbox syncros have had it. Can barely get it in gear unless I match the revs properly. And getting it in reverse is hell. I think I'm going to stop reversing. Firstly, can anyone vouch for those symptoms being syncos. and secondly, if it is (like I suspect), Do I need to get Fto specific syncros or are these something that can be swaped in and out with aftermarket stuff. Seriously don't know much about gearboxes.

Sounds more likely that your box has too heavy an oil in it.

Before you do anything drastic, I would suggest trying some new oil.
Me? Bitter? f**k no. I think it's hilarious.

Agreed ^

However if oil change doesn't resolve it, I've got some spare second hand syncros. They're ****ing expensive to buy new.

Reverse doesn't have a synchro, so maybe your problem is elsewhere as mentioned.

Usually when synchros fail, it starts off with a particular gear (in these gearboxes I noticed 3rd is first to go).

Bennoz, how much is a synchro set if you know?

Pretty sure gear box does have reverse synchro to my knowledge one of few cars for its time that did. Agree though not often they all go at once. Have you checked cable and bracket of course oil could be cause too

when the sycros and output bearing went in my gearbox, 4th suffered massively, with 2nd and reverse being hard to grab as well. that was a freak curcumstanse though, the gear box casing where one of the out put shaft bearings ran in had cracked and threw the whole shaft out of f**k. hope your fix isn't near as expensive as mine was.

Spetz was right, it turned out NOT to be synchros. My clutch fork had broken and the broken part went into the clutch.... because that's healthy. Anyone got a Clutch fork I can buy?

I have no idea. I did get the FTO off this shady guy, and I needed to fix a bunch of stuff to bring it to roadworthy. So he probably abused the crap out of it.

I live in Toowoomba Qld, but if you can get me one by the end of the week you'd be my saviour. I'll PM you.
