People of poor socioeconomic backgrounds do this because in their circles this car would be considered impressive and would be the "talk of the town".
What they fail to realize however is that the rest of the world sees them as clowns.
So basically, if for an average person a $100,000 car is impressive, for them spending $3,000 on some stupid mods expresses their "wealth" comparative and relative to the other people they know.

This is my interpretation which of course could be wrong.
Now, Astron_Boy will come and give you the answer "Gen Y" but don't listen to him :lol:
