If fiberglass fenders are illegal because of crash safety regulations etc, god help those who drive carbon fibre shelled exotics should they crash

It's not like they will notice unless they actually knock on it and properly inspect it!

I am not that concerned about the police, more so insurance not paying out in the case of an accident.

Actually, im not sure. I wouldnt have thought they would be an issue if a front bar isnt.

I know there are legalities regarding bonnets due to crumple zones, i'd imagine that this'd have to apply to front bars and fenders as well.

Technically were replacing the crumpling aspects of metal for the splintering aspects of fibreglass/carbon fibre

What im trying to say is that I would have thought that the front bar would be in issue before the guards were. I can understand the bonnet as that can shear and do nasty things to people, but the guards arent going to have that effect.

Have done a bit of research and found this

1.1 BASIC MODIFICATIONS NOT REQUIRING CERTIFICATION

The following basic modifications do not require certification under the LH Codes, if they are
carried out in accordance with the requirements specified in sub-section 2 General
Requirements and sub-section 4 Modifications Without Certification.

* Bonnet scoops and projections;
* Bonnet pins and mascots;
* Customised and replacement panels;
* Inner mudguard modifications; and
* Glass and surface films.

2.7 FIBREGLASS

2.7.1 Strength and Thickness
The thickness, of non-intrusion panels, with gel coat removed, must be at least 3.5mm.
Bonnets and guards are examples of non-intrusion panels.

4.3 CUSTOMISED AND REPLACEMENT PANELS

4.3.1 Customised Metal Panels
Body panels may be customised (e.g. to fit alternative lamps), provided that the structural
integrity of the body is not adversely affected and the vehicle continues to comply with all
relevant ADRs.

4.3.2 Fibreglass and Other Composite Replacement Panels
Original bolt-on metal bonnets and mudguards for pre 1971 (ADR 10) vehicles may be replaced
with fibreglass or other composite panels that comply with sub-section 2.7, providing the
modification does not increase the rigidity of the front structure of the vehicle and the
collapsibility of the steering column on ADR 10 vehicle is not compromised.
The catches and/or the design of the replacement bonnet must prevent it from being propelled
through the windscreen into the cabin area in the event of a frontal collision.

So in other words, its perfectly legal provided they are 3.5mm thick?

That states bonnets and mud guards - which a fender or quarter panel is not a mud guard (or do they actually think that at the transport dept?)

Either way, it is best to just ask the DMV instead of assuming this and that over the net.

Walk into a cop station and ask, even if it is illegal, if no cop realises it is, youll never get done for it etc. Theyre the best bet to ask.

Like I said above, the main concern is not the police but insurance. If there is no documented information that they are legal, they can decide not to pay out in the case of an accident because the car is "illegal".

Well ring your insurance company up and ask them.
I know the company I am with are ok with them and also carbonfiber parts .

Every time I ask, im getting told next week they will be starting to come out of the mould. Id aim for 6 weeks at most.
