Muffler for FTO (Is this stock?)

OK, for starters, theres normally a rear muffler between the rear axle and the cannon in those pics. That will certainly make a difference. Ive got dual triple flow mufflers on twin exhaust system (youd only need one). It will have to be custom as you cant get the stock ones unless you rip one off a wreck. An exhaust shop should be able to get it legal for you. You may end up losing the cannon in the process though.

Thats an aftermarket system. 2.5" by the looks.

You need a muffler.

Just het an apexi active tail silencer. Far cheaper than redoing the whole exhaust and are readily available of rhd Japan and you won't need to lose the cannon etc just goes in the end of your pipe

I don't really mind losing the cannon. I measured the pipe to be like 2 1/2".
Is having a muffler a legal requirement? I mean it did pass rego (somehow..)

Also Taz what do you mean redoing the whole exhaust? Adding a muffler to the rear requires a whole new system?
I wasn't expecting it to be more then around 350..

Driving home today I went past a highway patrol with a radar gun, I immediately shifted up a gear and let my foot off completely, they both just stared at me as I idled past them. My heart sank, really don't need a defect right now lol

Nah, you wont need to replace the whole system. At the least, you need a muffler added at the back. Dont know if this will quiet it down enough or not. An exhaust shop should be able to provide advice. To get 'Noticed' less, get rid of the cannon and put a subtle sports tip on it instead. This may also quieten it down a little more.

Dude seriously, you dont need to change out your exhaust, just throw on one of these -

The only thing youll need to do is make up the end of the pipe to a 3.5inch so this will fit on and your done - will be less than 200 and you still keep your exhaust and sell the cannon to make up 1/2 of that cost

Might be able to dig one up on ebay for cheaper still...

It does sound very mean, but it's even annoying to drive, I have to turn my speakers right up lol.

I've sent some emails to exhaust shops out of town with some pictures and basically told them I wanted what you mentioned.

Thanks dude i will look into it, I'm gonna get some quotes for a muffler and tip first before I rush off to buy anything.
Also they make cars sound horrible

This is the response I got:

Hi Tom, firstly 2.5" is way too big for an FTO which is why you can't control the noise.
Replacing a cannon with a Magnaflow will make little or no difference as they are a straight through muffler also
It needs a triple flow muffler to control the noise and possibly go down a size in pipe to 2.25 and also put a resonator in if it doesn't have one
A mild steel cat back system will cost you $425 fitted. A magnaflow alone fitted will cost that or more.
Would need the car for 1/2 a day and a couple of days notice to do the job for you.

Does this sound right?

Wrong!. 2.25 inch is stock exhaust size. Optimum exhaust size is 2.5 inch to minimise restrictions (and this wont impact noise). Any bigger and you will lose power.

Yep. This is what I have on mine and it does a good job to reduce noise

also put a resonator in if it doesn't have one

This is probably a reasonable idea.

Just replace it with 'normal' sports muffler. I can already see a resonator in the system in your pics.

There's a bazillion brands you could use. Hightech, Magnaflow, Flow Master just to name a few.

Here's a setup I used to use before going boosted. Its 2.5" with Hightech mufflers & resonator.

And if its still too loud, you can use muffled tips, like these Magnaflow units

Yep the cannon is definitely going, I'm sure it would make some commodore owner very happy.

So based on the suggestions, any sort of sports triple flow muffler and a new tip/silenced tip if its still loud?
