saving your foglight switch

Post by efteoh »

Hi Guys

since everyone is doing lighting mods, i might as well share mine too. (and ruchies post motivated me :D )as everyone is aware, the standard fog light switch has a tendancy to burn out or melt! this has resulted me in driving home at night with inadequate head lights, poor street lights and the utter refusual to turn on my driving lights in case i burn out the switch!

parts needed:
soldering iron, solder, multi meter
fig8 auto cable (15amp) x 6 meters Part# W3078
30A SPDT part # sy4070 x1
horn relay base sy4069 x1
cable ties
3mm globe with leads part#sl2685 - this is if you want to replace the globe in the switch.

you should take off the bumpber bar to make the job easier, also you might as well replace the parker lights with white LEDs while your at it.

when you unplug the fog lights, take note of which pair goes to the fog lights, (theres 6 pairs, parkers, indicators, foglights)

make sure with a multi meter that they are the ones that go to the foggies
cut the fog light wires from the plug and make sure to leave about 5 cm from the plug, (you'll need it later) and join the loom end to the pins "c" & "d"

test to see if you can hear the relay clicking whne you switch the foggies on and off.

here run the wire from your battery to near where you washer reserve is, (left side of car)

wire up pin "E" of the relay to the wire you got straight from the battery.

run a length of wire fom the left fog ligh to the right foglight, if you look under the radiator, there should be a conduit with a whole lot of cables in it, run the wire along with this securing it down ewith cable ties. this is now the positive wire

connect the positive wire of both left and right foggies to pin "A" of the relay

now ground the negative terminal of the foggies to any good ground you can find there, i used the bit where the bumperbar fixes to.

oh and the 3mm lights, go into the fog light switche in the dash.
NB, this is assuming you have the working fog light switch. soory if its disjointed, its my first how to.

cheers

Are you saying that the fog light switch is supposed to illuminate when they're on?

yes, and when you have your other lights on (parker, head lights etc) all the part numbers are from jaycar electronics. but try to either paint or source little rubber sock (condoms) for the globes otherwise they look orange and really stupid. you need 3mm ones, repco only sell down to 5mm
