Re: Very low idle on startup, sometimes dies
Started it today, same low revs but it stayed on, idled at about 1100 though. Theres no battery light problem now so hmm
Hey silver is this the vacuum line you're talking about?

I'll have a look at cleaning the stepper motor, because hey it cant hurt.
Also could this just be the ECU re learning? Since the mechanic would have most likely disconnected the battery?

No, that's not the vacuum line Silver was talking about.
There's a smaller vacuum line going from the sensor that's in the centre of that photo with the brown clip on the firewall to the back of the manifold (further down).

Re: Very low idle on startup, sometimes dies
Just thought I should add,
today the engine light came on and won't go away. I'll check the codes?
Also when the car does die down as the idle drops, the battery light isnt fully on its kinda feint and flickers until it dies ..

Re: Very low idle on startup, sometimes dies
Same thing today, stalled first time it started, second time it just made it to a normal idle. Also I drove it for a good 20 minutes, and it's rev limiting at about 6500..
I got some pictures today of the battery terminals since I don't know what to look for if they're bad or not,
and the firewall for the vacuum line
really dont know what I'm looking for here..

And then the battery terminals

Yes I'm aware of the cold air pipes being dodgy as hell, they're going to be replaced after I sort out this issue

Re: Very low idle on startup, sometimes dies
Just an update for whoever is still watching this.
I've searched the forum for 'rev limiting' and I've found that the alternator dying/alternator cable ruined can cause the rev limit at 6100 which I get, and also for accessories to not work as well. When I turn my headlights on they are very bright and a second later they drop down to a lower brightness. I checked the alternator and its plugged in fine, so I'll do a multimeter test on monday or take it to Auto-One and see if they can diagnose it.
Does this sound correct, that its the alternator misbehaving?

Re: Very low idle on startup, sometimes dies
Im very surprised this isnt solved yet - usually its a case of replace stepper motor/alternator etc and its fixed
I would say the alternator is the culprit here, it ties in with the electrics playing up and can cause the rev limiter to be enforced - these tests on monday will tell all i think.
GL with it in any case

Re: Very low idle on startup, sometimes dies
Sounds like an alternator reconditioning might do the trick. Cheaper than replacing it.

Re: Very low idle on startup, sometimes dies
Alright thanks guys.
Just curious if removing the alternator is as hard as I think it is, being right near the bottom behind the block. Or would it be easy to just do it from underneath the car?

Re: Very low idle on startup, sometimes dies
You take the drivers strut out, put a jack and block of wood under the sump, take bolt out of top drivers side engine mount, take off alt belt, loosen 2 bolts securing the alternator, now jack the engine up until you can wriggle the alternator out.
