Custom Taillights

Post by dstocks »

Im looking at putting together a set of custom taillights. I think I can simplify the existing case and come up with a fibreglass mould that will allow the perspec cover to be simplified to reduce cost. So, can sort out the case and the cover with time. What im having an issue with is LED lights. Im looking for an indicator that is round and about 1.5 inches in size (~4cm), a Brake Taillight that is about 1.75 inches (~4.5 cm) and a brake taillight that is around 2.25 inches (~6cm). These are almost perfect other than the cost:

http://www.harleyaustraliaaccessories.c ... P50351.php

DOes anyone know where I can locate stop/taillights that are between 4-7cm in size. Everything I have been able to find so far is either 4 inches (10cm) or a marker lamp (wont do brake + taillights)

Hoping to work out how to bulk manufature them for a reasonable cost. Will look somewhat like the original Project F lights.

I seem to be able to find plenty of marker lights around the right size (they just dont support stop/tail). Would a LED bayonet bulb that supports brake/taillight work OK behind the lens if I was to throw away the guts of it.

You would assume so, but you wouldn't want to have to modify all the bulbs you ship with the taillights.

Why LED though? Couldn't you just use the standard bulb through a reflector?

You could modify something like this to fit in: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/48-SMD-White ... 0758798929

But then you would need an easy way to separate the lights so that it can be installed.
      LED ALL the things.

I'm having no luck on a search either.
The fact it's such a specific size is the problem.

The alternate here being that you could modify a particular one, and have the circle kind of cut off at the top and bottom and a more flat look.
Think 2010 Chevy Camaro tail lights...

      Just a thought.

Quite like these. Expensive though at $64 each. And would need to find matching smaller indicator versions (yes I know this can do indicators too). Sort of came to the conclusion that motorcycle lights were about the only option. Did find this site too.

      http://www.ledspecialfx.com.au/products.html

This is looking promising. Rang the guy and it looks like I might be able to make it work.

Agree on the $$ price factor.

        Nice find with ledspecialfx though.

Instead of fibreglass, this might be a better option since you don't have mould costs:

I like what you are thinking there! Thanks for the link.

Not if I get it in black it wont. Besides, it wont really be in direct sunlight as it will be behind the lens and I imagine people will want to paint it anyway.
