Bad brake drag?

Post by Technikhaus »

Lately we've noticed a puncture in one of Nick's tyres so decided to jack up the wheel and see if we can find the source... we didn't, but what we did find was a huge resistance when trying to spin the wheel...? The Handbrake was off so it must mean he has a bad case of brake drag.

This explains why he has no braking power....

As you can see its pretty bad... looks like he needs new pads and rotors.
What do you Guys?

Inspect rotors for warp, pads for wear.
My guess as with most wheels like that.
A: rebuild caliper
B: wheel bearing

Thanks for that,
We believe that the Brakes are already warped, as you can feel them :?
Not too sure about the pads though.

rotors affect the pads, so replace both at the same time.

Thanks for the help guys,
Would that also explain why the hand brake is practically useless?

I had this issue with my FTO, the calliper piston outer edge was corroded and stopping the piston from returning.
I stripped down the caliper, cleaned the piston with light emery paper, installed using a little brake fluid as lubricant. I also lubed the outer hanbrake mechanism with WD40

Hey your handbrake cable could also be stuffed and not returning when you release, get a friend to operate handbrake while you check operation at caliper.

Be very careful about what lubricants you use with the brake calipers, as you need to ensure that you use a rubber-compatible grease or lube. Other ones have a tendency to eat away at the rubber, and then you run the risk of losing all braking performance.
I'll have an FTO one day... i swear!

until then:

2. 2007 Peugeot 307 TDi (more fun than you'd expect)

A friend to pull the stick for you?

But seriously, im assuming warped rotors as mine do the same. I know I have warped rotors (mechanic told me but didnt fix them ??) and they drag for a bit when slowing down, stop dragging, drag for half a second, stop, etc.
I fix cars.

Yea, Sounds similar to Nicks,
I think he is going to be buying some new slotted rotors, and some Yellow Stuff pads in the near future, to replace it all :)

Check out the ebc web site for all the info :D .
I had the reds for some time with no problems, lasted a number of track days, club drives and day to day street use. They are a low dust pad too so you don't need to wash the rims as often.

Yeah RedStuff.

Yellow are 200hp + rated, unnecessary for street use.

No doubt to both accounts, but the cost of freight for items that heavy make the purchase useless.

Surely there is an alternative brand of rotor available in NZ.

EDIT: there you go, saved you near $100 NZD

I'll get him to have a better look around, but most places locally are just plain rip offs....
