Electrics system - Power when unlocked.
Hey guys!
So last night Braydon (technikhaus) and I tried to install the boot release button I have been planning. We managed to get the wiring in and the actuator hooked up, but were still having one problem.
Because the button is on the outside of the vehicle, any old bugger could come up and open my boot (which usually carries thousands of dollars of equipment) and take all I own.... Yeah Nah!
So we need to find a way to find to hook up the system to a power source that is only on when the car is unlocked via the remote. We tried hooking it to the boot release wire that comes from the security system immobiliser box but found that it needs programming to be activated, and without a dash LED to help us programme it that option is ruled out.
Next we looked at the mirror lights as they come on when you unlock the car but unfortunately it uses a signal cable to switch on the lights once you unlock the car. so we don't think that will work either. It was the same deal with the ignition ring LED.
So you can see our problem, we need a 12 volt source that will only power on when the car is unlocked/ security system deactivated.
Anyone have an idea of what we could do? Having the button is so great! and I cant wait to remove the key lock off of the boot!
Cheers everyone! Happy driving!
Nick and Braydon.

Only options I can give you involve a tap.
Why don't you have a dash LED? have you cut off the wiring from the module, not visible, what?
Kinda silly not utilising a function that the alarm system would come with already.

I would have thought it was default function of the alarm? If you have a boot pop button on the remote, then it would be. Otherwise, as Astron said, hook up the led & program it.
Then all you need do is run that trigger line from the alarm to a relay, and depending on what type of trigger (its usually a neg trigger) then wire as follows.

^ that's exactually how we have the boot setup.
When I was sussing out the wiring for the alarm, I couldn't see any wire for the LED at all
I thought It may have been like the boot wiring, just sitting there.
The remote does have a second button though, which i'm guessing would be for the boot, as currently it does nothing.
this is the unit here:

This is the button we have installed.

We also have no idea where to wire the LED into

Think of most modern day cars where you don't need a key, it's simply a button that's active upon power.payaya wrote:The outside part I don't get? What's the point?Bennoz wrote:Fairly self explanatory I would have thoughtpayaya wrote:What is a boot release button???

That's the idea of it:)Think of most modern day cars where you don't need a key, it's simply a button that's active upon power.
And I have no idea why there is no LED? I didn't install the system...
The second button on the remote is being used so hence why the button on the outside. I am copying the idea off of my dad's Ford Territory. It has a split boot where you simply press the button to open it. It just makes accessing the boot easier and more efficient.

Re: Electrics system - Power when unlocked.
I can understand the logic, it's simply in your particular case due to a bodge alarm install, or whatever, you are working with a system that has the ability, but you can't access it.
I remember on my old alarm, the program function was not only tied to the LED, but also the cars indicators to make things more obvious. The alarm had requirements for doors closed, and so they made it standard.
If I were you I'd be trying to get that alarm system to do the work, as it will be so much less of a headache that wiring in extra relays and what not for the same effect.

Re: Electrics system - Power when unlocked.
This one is a combination of both, LED to select numbers, and indicators to confirm etc...

Don't ya have a switched 12 volt output on your alarm?

Re: Electrics system - Power when unlocked.
We can't find a spare one, we probably might just cut into one of the outputs to the doors... if it will work...

Wire a relay that sources power from your door unlock circuit. Boot can only be opened with doors unlocked.

Re: Electrics system - Power when unlocked.
Had another play around with it today, and seem to have gotten it partly working...
we took a look at the central locking unit, and it seems it only provides power when the doors are locked, and the 12V is removed to unlock them
but played around with the alarm unit, and got the relay partly working using the -ve output on the alarm, it now unlocks the boot when the car is locked, and locks it when the car is unlocked.
So when repco opens again tomorrow, we will change the relay over for a normally closed unit, and hopefully that will fix it all

Re: Electrics system - Power when unlocked.
The FTO central locking, pin switches are negatively triggered. So even when unlocked there is still 12 volts. It relies on the negative pulse to trigger the lock actuators.
If your alarm has no 12v switched output or an delayed aux then there is no point.
You need to find the door unlocked wire and hook the relay to that circuit.
