Can anyone tell for sure from these pics what my problem is?
Like does this mean it's burning oil (or is that impossible due to where it is?), or is it oil getting in the intake plenum from the crank case breather (which is also oily) as the plenum is also the same?
This happens with age.
You need something like "seafoam" upper engine cleaner, or what a friend used with great success is a Subaru product which is called "upper engine cleaner".
You can get it from Subaru, as it is part of scheduled servicing for them.
It works really well, you spray it on and it froths up and you can see how it just gets rid of everything. Impressive stuff.

Oh ok, i've seen it on previous FTO's but not this bad, pretty normal then and not a sign of a problem per say?
Yeah looks pretty normal to me. If you really want to stop it happening as much, ditch the crank case breather off the intake. Run it to a catch can instead.
