Worthwhile?

Post by bjk »

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/deta ... rt=default

I may be immediately insane for even considering one with known rust, but it's got the lowest Ks in SA. Needs some repair, so I'm wondering what sort of range I could try and haggle it down to if I was trying. It's been there for a while (wondering if it's actually still for sale) and it is o.n.o.

Thoughts?

WELL...just from a few pics which is hardly anything to judge a car by - but the body and paint seem to be in good nic - id say enough to go check out the car IF its local.
It all depends on what else is wrong with the car - it is very risky buying something that has known problems that cost upwards of a few k to fix (not sure on the tacho to fix but im assuming its not going to be a simple quick fix)
If your going to haggle him down both agree on a viable price for the car on the assumption that its in good working order and everything is fixed in good condition, then from there get a few quotes and inspections as to how much it is going to cost to get everything repaired and then take that of the agreed price, so by the end of repairs the car has been bought for a fair, agreed price once all monies are spent.
Thats my late night ramblings anyway.

It does say the photos are quite old, but again, photos don't tend to tell the whole story anyway. It also doesn't mention any other problems per se, but if I really felt like going for it, an RAA inspection would probably be a must..

(Was just looking at a car with my dad recently that appeared to be fine, but the check came back with a few needed repairs that might end up pushing 1K, so we decided against it).

I've heard around that roof rust goes from under a grand to about two depending on severity and who does it, but I have no car savvy in that regard, as well as the revolution meter. But thanks for the feedback anyways.

Haha, I know the topic. But it has been there a while, and that's why I'm wondering, since nobody really wants to go for a rusted one, if I could shave a couple grand off the price if he's desperate to get rid of it.

Can try placing your thumb on the rust area and applying small amount of pressure with your ears open.
Rice bubble-snap,crackle, pop sound gives a idea of rust collapse.
Good to bargain the price down to leave some aside.

G/L!

I viewed the car and drove it about 8 months ago when they wanted 7000 for it.

I decided against it even for an offer 5000 due to the exterior and interior looks.

However it seemed to drive well, but I'm no mechanic.

If you could get it for 3000 it might be worthwhile but get inspection and quote to fix rust properly.

I checked this out for another member a while ago, car is mechanically sound except tacho (easy fix) but the exterior needs some work not worth it

How much work? So much that an offered price would probably be rejected? I mean, once you start dropping it at 3k and below, I guess it's pushing what someone will accept. But again, if they're really desperate in a couple months..
