Unique: New CAMS MIVEC and NON-MIVEC

Post by smorison »

as some of you will know Rob's blue GR with white stripes has been in at Unique now for several weeks whilst he gets a new engine fitted... The CAMS out of this (GR) have been sent off to a Performance CAMS shop to be redesigned to provide a better driving experience ;) Shortly we will be doing the same with MIVEC CAMS...

The initial reports back are that there will be a good increase in power however the designers are being pretty cagey about just how much at the moment....

The MIVEC CAMS are going to take a bit longer (sometime in the next month) before we get a sample back to test...

To ensure quality of build and reliability this mod will probably be run in limited cars for the first month or two to ensure that they won't brake, after that they will be available to everyone.

What changes are expected from these new cams? i.e. are you simply going for a more agressive cam or targetting specific rev-ranges etc.

obviously we are going to have to keep duration / lift to ourselves... i'm not sure how the GR cams are being modified at the moment... my thoughts on the MIVEC cams are to increase torque down low (low speed cam) and have a seriously hardcore high speed cam...

again this is upto the experts to decide how to achieve all this and what is actually achievable ... but the MIVEC cams can have a heap more mods made to them as they are essientally two different CAM ratios on the one wobbly stick.

well 4 cams for a 300zx were built for about 1400.00 from memory so i'd estimate the price to be somewhere around this mark i hope but i can't confirm at this stage it just depends on how many man hours have to go into making them...

the way i've been approaching everything with Unique is looking at it from a Cost v's (performance gain + purchase cost + install cost)... to date we've done pretty much everything that can be "bolted" on and is relatively cheap...

unfortunately now we've hit the wall as far as performance gains and for cheap... but at the sametime we're getting into mods which hopefully have major gains and are still affordable for those who are interested in performance increases

hmmm... the 300zx isnt variable valve timing though is it? so i would expect that mivec cams would be dearer....

"FTO" + "internal engine mods" = $$$$$ :(

Actually from 95-96 on ward 300Zx had variable timing, but there aren't many of those in Oz, so i guess the the cam was for the non-vari one.

I really wonder how would it affect the idle, so far all the car i've seen with modify cam had a very rough idle. But yeah can't wait steve, a set of cam around $1400 would be on top of my list now.

ah ok... i didnt realise that...my bad :P

i guess if they dont change the non-mivec lobes too much, idle shouldnt be too bad... itll be interesting to see what they come up with....

either way, it should be a better option to rpw cams which, i believe, cost about 2.5k :?

what a light bulb moment...

John imported one of those engines cause its an alloy block and lighter than the old boat anchor... so yeah he does have VVT then...

puts the pricing pretty nice doesn't it... but again it's not confirmed yet but i would hope that the pricing will be at least 1000.00 cheaper than RPW's quoted 2600 (supply only)...

THis might open another can of worms. But wouldn't be better to also develop adjustable cam gears with the new cams.

This allows people the option to dial in the degree accordingly depending on what mods they have done and later on.

we've already looked at this (whilst my engine was apart having a minor rebuild)... couple of problems with adjustable gears

1. you can't tune both low and hi speed cams.
2. tuning them is very very expensive.

this is why we're going down the path of new CAMS... we can tune both the low and hi speed cams... granted it will be to match other uniqueFTO products however it will provide the best result... they will be tested on cars less modified than mine to ensure that there is still a performance gain.

*put's hand up*

So who's going to get the testing duties? If you asked nicely... :D

If price around $1k, going to be near on impossible to resist. Major service coming up soon-ish too. Would be a great time to fit the new cams I thinks!

Steve, if u bring out these CAMS around 1.5K i dont think i can ever sell my car!!

btw, if someone has a turbo setup already and gets CAMS would they get a reasonable performance increase still?

it'll probably be tanya as she also has a good relationship with UAS and if her engine blows up knows they'll fix it properly ;)

don't know yet to be honest... the testing is basically to make sure they are durable and reliable...

I suspect the whole purpose of the cam gears is to dial them in properly so they are running in spec.

That's all cam gears were ever designed to do, if you run cams out of spec, you're not going to get the benefits of what the cam is designed for. and especially for extremely hot cams, where tolerance will be at a minimum, you won't be able to run the car if the cam is out.

You have to get the cam right first go if you're building a custom cam unless you have the money to build a few tests =)

i would imagine so...

that's why we partner with different companies for different things :) give the CAM experts a set of CAMS and the engine spec's and they can work out from experience what can be done to them ;) and with any luck they spend their money on R&D ;) saving ours...

While it would be possible to use these cams with a turbo, given the agressive nature of the new cams I think you'd be better off using the normal cams with a turbo.
