Re: Intake and exhaust tappets?
Good information here.
Sticking or oil starved Mivec hydraulic lifters will only make noise below the Mivec point as the un-tensioned Mivec follower roller makes a double skip over the Mivec lobe of the cam, above the Mivec point the the Mivec follower is locked in place by the Mivec pins and then tensioned by the valve spring meaning there will be little to no detectable noise.
If after properly adjusting the adjustable tappets there is still tappet sounding noise, then you will need to clean or replace the hydraulic Mivec lifters, ideally this can easily be done while adjusting the tappets as long as you only remove one cam cap at a time on each bank.
Once clean and operating correctly the hydraulic tappet / lifter on the Mivec and non Mivec engine can be kept clean by just using the correct grade of oil and changing it regularly.

Dude, why are you getting so uptight about adjusting the tappets? Who really cares how many tappets it has or hasn't got. All you really need to know is whether or not you have the confidence to do your own tappets. If you do, then get on and do them. Once you've done them once it gets easier and easier the next times.

Who cares how many it has aye? The 12 non adjustable also cause a tap. So im pretty sure they're just as important as the other 24. Pretty sure you need to know how many tappets there are to do a proper job.
Im guessing you've never done your own, seeing as you believe there are only 12 adjustable. Hey atleast you know there are 12 non ajdustable now which are seperate to the 24 adjustable and are located ontop of your mivec followers.
And dont even tell me you knew because if you did you'd know there were 36 tappets in total.
And i've already done mine twice, so im quite confident.
My knowledge has greatly increased and at the end of the day, thats all i give a f**k about.
Everyone was a noob once.

Re: Intake and exhaust tappets?
Let me start by saying that I too have done my tappets (GR and not GPX) and that I know what a bitch of a job it is. I spent weeks looking into it and trying to understand what they do, how they work and why they tap. I read DIYs from a variety of forums on a variety of different engines. There was even a YouTube clip of a guy doing the tappets on an evo that I found very useful. Bitch of a job, congrats for tackling it.
At the end of the day though, this is an open forum where people give their opinions. It is up to you to filter out what you want to listen to and what you want to ignore. If you are confident enough to tackle the job, that is great. If you feel you have learnt enough and you have the time and wish to contribute to the community, please write up a comprehensive DIY.
Flaming people for being incorrect is not what this forum is about. The people on here are not mechanics are not paid and owe you nothing. They are passionate about FTOs and try to help but that is it.

Re: Intake and exhaust tappets?
Couldn't agree more with you.
But had you actually read what's going on here I'm not flaming people's opinions.....
Ummm there actually aren't any opinions in this thread?
He deserved that flame and he knows it. Before he goes pointing the finger at me, ranting on and making comments that id be shot, he should get his f**king facts right.
And before bennoz rants on about how i need to be spoon fed he should also learn to give consistent information and learn how to takle questions correctly. Mate not everyone has the mechanical knowledge you possess. Was the first f**king time i've removed the rockers covers from my car.
I don't actually feel i should waste my time doing a DIY. Ive put in a lot of effort into researching just like yourself and at the end of the day i have wankers such as storm who don't have a f**king clue, giving me sh*t.
The DIY does not contain anywhere near enough information to be a useful guide. Its pretty much a DIY on removing a rocker cover. So everything else I've learnt was found through research and bits a pieces from members who were willing to contribute to this thread.
I appreciate people's help but if you want to make a big deal about it, f**k off, I don't want your help?
So to whoever else is planning on fixing your tappets in your GPX, you now have all the info you need within this thread.....
There are 36 tappets. 24 adjustable, 12 non adjustable. Each low speed cam lobe is adjusted by 2 tappets. There are 12 low speed cam lobes. 6 in the front head and 6 in the rear. The clearances for intake (camshafts closest to the valves) are 0.10mm on a cold engine. The clearances for exhaust (camshafts closest to the outside of the engine) are 0.13mm.
The 12 hydraulic tappets (non-adjustable) are located ontop of you mivec followers.
There are 3 mivec followers in each head and they run directly down the center of the two camshafts. To get to the tappets here, you need to remove the cam caps.
Anyway, that ends my rant, and to those who will post beyond this who attempt to criticize me....

Re: Intake and exhaust tappets?
This is a lot of hostility for a single thread.
Now for my 2 cents.
Firstly, just to clarify on one thing that Ben said when he stated "over 4 threads and..." i think he might of meant pages, not threads.
That being said.
At the end of the day dude, you are getting angry at people on a forum for giving what u believe to be misleading and/or incorrect information, not having a go - but come on, its the internet, how long have you been here (referring to the net, obviously not long if you get upset this easily
)? Not everything is going to be simple, in words/descriptions you can understand and easily taken in, especially on things like tappets - you cant point the finger here, its your own fault you chose to follow information on the internet at the end of the day.
Also, not really taking sides here, but i will point out that there has been numerous pictures, some with indicators on them to help even further, numerous vital facts and contributing opinions, and without this thread or others you would of taken it to a mechanic as you wouldnt know what the hell to do most likely, again at the end of the day, its the internet, and regardless of how much they have all helped, they still helped in some way shape or form. Still haven't seen a thank you for this...
Ben is the president. I would of thought as an adult you might of shown some courtesy towards him and been grateful that this site even exists for you to rant incoherently about this information you disagree with, from what i understand Ben was/is a mechanic or something along the lines (dont quote me on that) and many other people who have tried to help on this thread also have a great deal of experience on FTO's as well, that you would have to hunt down and pay good money for said information.
I think Ben and Dras were right in saying, if you aren't confident enough, or are confused by this information, take it to someone who knows their stuff to do it. It might cost but its always better to get someone who knows what they're doing over trying to follow a DIY thread on the internet on something with what seems to be a steep learning curve. I personally use this rule myself, especially with brakes, thats one thing i wont f**king touch, its not worth it and it seems tappets maybe added to this list.
Also, i don't think Storm meant any hostility by when he posted that comment, don't know why your quite disrespectful towards him about a comment on the internet, i cant stress this enough - its the internet i mean come on how old are we all? Be thankful you don't have to pay or do anything to get this information in the first place.
Ive been though the whole sh*tty angry phase on here myself, even though it was brief i soon realized that there is a certain etiquette and to take some comments with a grain of salt, and to just be thankful that we have experienced people here taking time out of their day to try and help/teach people they do not know, how to do something i'm sure they're sick of explaining, which is fair enough - to those people, thank you i've probably never said that.
Its a shame about your tappets, but get over it, move on and be thankful for what you DID get out of this thread that was useful, better than a kick in the teeth.
I just hope that all threads that are not going to go your way will be met with inappropriate and immature posts that only make yourself look like an angry child
And with that, sincerely - GL with getting your tappets back to 100%, congrats on tackling the job yourself and lets hope it goes well for you, just try not to get so angry in the future, i guess especially at the president/well respected members, would hate to see Kaz bring out the ol' ban stick and beat somebody with it repeatedly

Re: Intake and exhaust tappets?
.....
Let me spell it out for all of you seeing as you all seem as retarded as eachother?
Im annoyed at;
1. Bennoz's statements. Im not a f**king moron. I had questions, he didnt need to be a c**t about it. Had a sook when i wasnt understanding. Well the reason i wasnt understanding was due to incorrect information posted by himself and other members. So if you all want to cry when i dont understand things how about you give the correct f**king information in the first place?
I dont really care who's club president. Everyone is on equal level and if he wants to be a c**t about things, fine, il dish it in return?.
Storm is a halfwit, enough said there.
Gives me smartassed responses and gets frustrated with me when his INCORRECT INFORMATION CONTRIBUTED TO MY CONFUSEMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
f**king sods, cant even comprehend where my anger is coming from while you all lick eachothers ass.
Either that or your too f**king lazy to read the comments and thought itd be a great idea to jump in with your gigantic sh*t talking post, trying to play the wise guy
Im gratefull for the help.... But as for the frustration shown by some when ultimately their own incorrect information was cause for their frustration....dont takw it out on me, get your facts f**king right before you do that.

mosti - you should get your medication adjusted man
First, what "INCORRECT INFORMATION CONTRIBUTED TO MY CONFUSEMENT (spelling) IN THE FIRST PLACE" as all I seem to have contributed was to say that the exhaust valves are on the exhaust sides of the heads and the intakes are on the insides? Is that to complicated for you to understand (and it is correct)
Second, I realise I have probably now been added to your little desktop folder titled "People I will kill" but you really are taking this all a little too far over some DIY on your car.
Yes, I took the piss a bit but this is the big boys forum, for big boys in the real world.

You then went on explaining how i should be shot.
Anyway, im done arguing with morons here.
Supplanter, please close this thread, its of no use to anyone anymore except "Bigboys" such as storm.
Thanks for the help guys.
