Intake and exhaust tappets?

Post by mosti »

I'm wanting to adjust my tappets and I'm having trouble with the DIY. It doesn't clearly state which tappets are intake and which are exhaust....

Few questions;

there are 2 locknuts, one for intake and the other for exhaust. is this correct? which one is which?
Also there are two lobes. The narrower one is low-speed cam, hence the one getting adjusted, correct?
In that pic those 2 locknuts are for the intake only, basically when you look at the engine with the rocker cover off, you got 2 valves near the intake manifold upper bit of the engine, bottom near the exhaust manifold is the exhaust valve, its sorta hard to explane.

Was wondering if possible if someone can edit the following photo's in a program such as paint, with red arrows showing the whereabouts of intake and blue for exhaust? If it's even possible to do so in these pics? :s

Oh and instead of modifying a 10mm ring spanner.....Would a 10mm flexible ring socket wrench work?...

A marking to distinguish the two?

Well yea the idea is on the ball but i need someone who actually knows 110% cause i dont wan to get the clesrances wrong and end up with a cooked valve.

I need to know what tappets are for intake and which for exhaust as they both require different clearances. Ive been searching all f**king day and still dont have a clue -.-

You are over thinking this!

Look at the pictures slowly! The air intake is in the middle of the engine, and air goes into those valves (in the middle of the engine), across the piston and back out on the side where the exhausts are.

Yes, the camshaft looks like it has two sets of cams on it and it does, but one is for normal and one is for MIVEC, not one for intake and one for output.

Sides as in top most bank and bottom most? (sides extractors are on).
So how many tappets are being adjusted at 0.10mm and how many for 0.13mm?
Is it 12 at 0.10mm and 12 at 0.13mm?

In the DIY it says the intake is 0.10mm and the exhaust 0.13mm.......

So the 0.13mm's would be all the tappets on the two outer camshafts (top most and bottom most). The 0.10mm tappets would be all the tappets located on the two inner camshafts.

So would the following be correct?

That look right?

I'm a complete noob as you guys can tell. I'm trying to learn though so that's a positive haha. :thumright:

yayyyy ....really?
Well atleast I know a lot more about how an engine works. I spent a lot of hours yesterday watching irrelevant videos hoping they'd give me clues lol.

Now all I need is someone to have a half-cut ready for me just in case something goes wrong :P

EDIT:

I need a 0.10mm and a 0.13mm...
My feeler gauge has a 0.102mm and a 0.127mm
So I have one that's oversize and one that undersize by +/- 0.002mm

Is it too varied?

My friend, I do not want to discourage you, but if you can't tell the intake from the exhaust then maybe this is a job better left to a professional.

If you do go ahead, those variances you mention with your feeler gauge will not make a difference. Make sure you read up on how to use a feeler gauge (I know it sounds simple, but I do suggest reading more into it).

cheers man.
Well I have the rocker cover off and good to go. Just gotta have some feeds before i get stuck into it.
The spanner thing I have doesn't fit as it's too wide. I didn't realise the nut was sat inside a grove type thing. Luckily I have the modified socket. Not sure if I'm going to be able to get a screwdriver down though as it's a 3/8 drive and not much room. Fingers crossed.

Front bak is done. Didn't take a long as I thought. Probably 5mins per lobe......crank engine.....another 5mins .....crank engine.. etc etc.

Just stopped for more feeds. (yes I eat every 2hrs :D) Oh and I had to watch the race (melbourne cup).

Now I've been here for 20mins trying to find how to remove the intake manifold. But no success. Sooooo....Ima just have to use my head and do it myself

Be back in 2hrs (if things go well) :P

Having a bit of an issue :s
I cant get the friggen plenum/ throttle body off.
Theres two hoses which go to the throttle body. Both have clamp clips. Got the clips off but fml....the hoses are like glued :s

EDIT:
So i decided to skip the idea of entirely removin the plenum/throttle body. The hoses look as though they are going to rip before they slide off. So instead if just flipped the plenum to the right.

Now, I'm not sure how to take these 3 coils (if that's what they're called) off. Do they just pull out?

f**k they need a DIY for this! I searched and found Bennoz included a link in his "replacing tappets" thread on how to remove everything to get to the rear bank of tappets. Unfortuntately this link is no longer valid :s

fmlfmlfml

EDIT:

PFFFT....either the link doesn't work or you can't see it if you havent paid for an ftocc membership -.-.
