Hi all,
I'm a new FTO owner and new to the forum so first of all hi!
Secondly I have trawled through a few of the posts regarding this limp mode thing. But from what I can tell mine is doing something sort of different and I need some advice.
I test drove my FTO with tiptronic and auto and it all worked fine.
Recently I was using tiptronic and the car jutted around all of a sudden and the gear was stuck in 3rd with the flashing light on the N (as far as I know this is the limp mode). I then left the car alone for a bit and drove it again that same day in auto mode and the car was stuck in first gear.
Left the car alone for another day and drove it and the auto works. it doesnt work normally though, it is gearing up 1,2,3,4 before 40km/h. When I slow down it only goes down to 3rd unless I come to a full stop and then it goes to first. I havent put it in tiptronic again as trhe car is 'driveable' at the moment and I dont want to stuff something completely up.
I'm planning on taking the car to get checked out but I dont want to take it in with no knowledge of whats going on.
Any help is greastly appreciated.

Dump the oil and put in a fresh batch and dont skimp. These boxes are pretty finnicky about the oil. Also check the error codes. Youll find plenty of threads on this if you search. When you have the error, let us know and well tell you where to go from there.

I tried searching however I dont seem to get the right answers from previous threads I've read so I apologise for doubling up on something that is obviously a cvommon issue and has been raised a million times
I changed the trans oil and filter....engine oil as well.
I had to disconnect the battery this morning and as such I may have lost the error codes....so I guess I'll have to see how it runs for now.
One thing I've noticed though is that if it is in auto mode....it seems to cycle up the gears very fast to 4th before hitting even 60km/h....is this normal?

output/input sensor.
it normally goes, change oil, check sensors, mechanical issue.
It WILL pop up on an error code check.

Okay, a couple of things. First, when changing down at lights, etc, the car will drop to third until you are about stopped. Thats normal. The only time it should be different is when you are going down hill when it drops a gear to give you some engine braking, then it can go into second.Fonzy wrote:I tried searching however I dont seem to get the right answers from previous threads I've read so I apologise for doubling up on something that is obviously a cvommon issue and has been raised a million times![]()

Second thing, how fast it cycles up through the gears depends on how far down your foot it. If you floor it, it should hang on until over 7K before it changes up, if you pootle around town gently it'll go through the gears like a raccoon through trash. It just means it is keeping your revs low and your fuel efficiency at maximum.
You will have lost the codes but they need to be activated a few times before it will go into limp mode so have a look for how to get them then, after a couple of days, read them and see what you have.
Then we can really get to work...

Re: Issue with transmission...limp mode etc
Hey thanks for your all your help so far guys.
It turns out its the output speed sensors. I've been told its part numbers MD758942 and MD759018 that need to be replaced.
In terms of the cycling through the gears I'm glad that it sounds correct and thats what normally happens. I haven't driven an auto in years so I have no idea really how they run....I'm used to controlling the shifting myself (which means I'll use the tiptronic more often).
