Insurance cover for under 20s?

Post by Adriano »

Hi, last weekend i helped a friend look for a manual GPX in sydney...
we were able to find one at a decent price, in very good condition... it was complied March last year...

anyways, he's 19 with 0% NCB and having troubles finding insurance cover with a reasonable premium... I did a search on the forum, i was able to find names of insurance companies but most of the ones i found were premiums for over 21s...

so my question is; anyone out there who's 19 with 0%NCB insured for less than 3k?? if you are please let me know... just trying to help a friend...

I think there is only a very few places, like Just Cars, but they would want over 5k most probably.

Best thing would be to go 3rd party, because I dout there would be any for under 3k for someone that's 19, I was sorta in the same boat except I was 20.

You could also try insurance brokers, they may find something for you...

I got my insurance with just cars, when i was 18 for $4500!! :(

But it went down the next year to $3800, so it shouldn't be that expensive soon. (I hope)

RACV wanted $10,000 , so Just cars didn't seem that bad at all. :D

I rang a few places, as soon as he hits, 21, he should give famous a call, the'll offer a pretty good premium...

With that said.. i'm 20, and well, there's no real resoanble comprehensive insurance for me, so i went with 3rd part, and a real sweet slick 2-way fm pager alarm. I do feel a lot more secure with the alarm..

However, I did have a nitemare last nite, that some guy, smashed my car and did a hit a run, and I never saw him again... If it happened in real life, i'd be in all sorts!!!!!

I think, i mite leave my car at home for the next week... I'l take mum's (she's overseas now :) ) just to be safe.

You should try young and cool. They specialise in organising insurance for young drivers with specialised cars. I actually got my insurance through them (though I'm 26, with full no claim bonus) but might be worth giving them a buzz.

my first cover for my fto was with young and cool... they were under DAWES then.. but on my second year, they said they werent under DAWES anymore, and that DAWES wouldnt renew my policy....
so got curious and rang DAWES for a quote... and surprise surprise, it was around $800 cheaper than what young and cool was offering....

Dawes is good but can only offer insurance for FTO's that are going to be garaged..... I missed out

It's going to be very very difficult/expensive to get insurance for our type of cars for under 21s.

I rang up a number of places for my cousin (19 as well) in Melbourne who has a WRX, and it's literally impossible. In the end, he settled for 3rd party and a tracker.
From FTO to EVO......

You guys would be crazy to accept anything under $1500 because at their rediculous rates they're expecting you to right off your car every few years or you pay the value of your car on insurance.

The best way is to give them the middle finger, go third party property, and dont crash. Then it's the insurance companies loosing out!!! If we all worked together to boucott the insurance companies they'd buckle from the lack of business.... Or be happy about it... either way you get my drift...

the way I saw it is... I'll pay $150 in third party. and hope noone steals or torches the car. if they do.. worst case senario its a 20k loss. very painful but not life destroying.

2. do an advanced driving course, they are about $500 and very useful. I've avoided about half a dozen potential crashes with principles i learnt from on of these.

3. in the rain... drive like a grandpa, no silly buggers, slow and steady no exceptions.

its been over 3 years, and ive saved about $6k on insurance (was quoteda lowest price of $2000 when I was 20 as a "secondry driver" under my parents name) ive had quite a few things happen to me, smashed panels, window broken into all from carparks, but nothing like the $6K + excess I would have been paying.

and as nofearzz said... "don't crash"!

Yeah with the don't crash thing. The other side of that is that to have comprehensive is great it that you don't have to worry. Having 3 accident in my 5 years of driving I know that it is a great peace of mind. THen I have a fairly modifired laser that costs me $500 odd a year just for thrid party fire and theft through just cars. It was over a $1000 for comprehensive. The FTO quote I got this year was $2500 with unlimited legal mods with a rating 6 I think I need to start from stratch. But I'm 22 in a few months so it should get a bit cheaper again.
