Evo IX gearbox
Hi guys,
Does anyone know if it is possible to use an Evo IX gearbox on an FTO?
I assume seeing as the FTO box fits the 4G63 then the 4G63 gearbox should fit the the FTO motor?
With a high final drive it should be a really nice gearbox ratio wise.

If it fits you would need all new drive shafts as well. Also I think the box mounts to the engine are a little out.

With money and adapter plates, anything will fit..
I have smashed up driveline and transmission tunnels so the W58 box will fit into Toyota Cresida's..

I just had to add it ......

Re: Evo IX gearbox
How hard would something like this be?
I am thinking the stock Evo clutch should fit fine, right?
And driveshafts, maybe Evo IV ones would fit?
And what about bolting the gearbox onto the engine? Seeing as there are FWD 4G63 front factory which use the same F5M42 gearbox, would it not be a direct fit?

What car came out of the factory with a FWD 4G63 engine spetz? The only one I could find was an old Eclipse but that was when the gearbox was on the other side of the 4G63.spetz wrote:How hard would something like this be?

Re: Evo IX gearbox
There were a few, I think the most notable one would be the Galant (EA2A).
It uses the same F5M42 transmission as 4G9X, 6A1X, 4G6X and even 4G1X engined cars use.

Not quite. There are 3 bolt differences on the top of the housing, 1 at the rear.spetz wrote:Hi guys,

This is an FTO box modified to suit a 4G63 (from Evo 6) - so to do what you're are talking about, it would be the reverse of this, modifiy Evo to suit FTO.
Not that much work really, just a bit of welding & drilling.

Re: Evo IX gearbox
So Bennoz you think it is feasible to do this?
I think the Evo IX box + 5.6 FD would yield a very quick accelerating car.
What about the transmission tunnel etc, will the AWD box clear it in a Lancer coupe?

Re: Evo IX gearbox
Oh yeah, forgot about the rear transfer case. It wont fit. You'd have to pull it off & come up with a side seal plate with oil seal & room for the drivers side driveshaft to go in.
If its just the gear ratio's you want, it'd be easier to swap the input & output clusters I'd reckon. Ie Evo box internals in FTO box casing.

Re: Evo IX gearbox
Personally I think its hair splitting, but if you're an NA enthusiast that does plenty of track work, it may mean lap time improvements.

Re: Evo IX gearbox
I think in a low torque NA motor gearing is extremely crucial.
Of course for people with 2.5 liters and a couple of turbos...
Bennoz,

Re: Evo IX gearbox
Can't see why not. All the Mitsi boxes have a surprising amount in comon. Its the same basic clutser sets in everything from the Mirage through to the Legnum.spetz wrote:I think in a low torque NA motor gearing is extremely crucial.

When I get a sec I might have a look at some ASA part numbers & cross references them.

Re: Evo IX gearbox
Thanks Bennoz I would really appreciate it.
I assume though that we would hear much more of the 6 speed gearbox being fitted into 5 speed evo boxes if it was viable/doable

Re: Evo IX gearbox
A lot of people are scared of cracking open boxes. It is a bit of a science in itself... They rather try fit the whole box.
Plus 6 speed from 5 speed also has some headaches. When manufactures try squeeze extra cogs into predefined spaces, it comes at a cost of space for the other cogs. Ie everything gets smaller / weaker. Very much the case on the Nissans, the SR20 red top had the indestructable 5 speed, the later model black tops had the playdough 6 speeds.

Re: Evo IX gearbox
Having opened the gearboxes, do you think the internals can be transferred over?
Yes I know the gearboxes lose strength, and I know the evo IX box is weaker, but if it can handle the stock Evo power and AWD then it can more than handle anything I would ever put it through.
